Synopsis

Gameday

When it comes to college football analysis, there is only one place fans go to each and every Saturday morning: ESPN's "College Gameday," with hosts Chris Fowler, Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit. Like no other pre-game show on TV, it has become a cultural phenomenon in the world of big-time college football. Real Sports correspondent Jon Frankel takes an in-depth look at college football's most popular show and its charismatic crew.

Impossible Choice

Buddy Miley lived in a state of unspeakable horror for more than half his life. At age 17 he was left a quadriplegic after suffering an injury while playing quarterback for his Warminster, Pa. high school football team. At the time of the injury, Buddy's brother Jimmy was only 11 years old, but the two brothers formed an inseparable bond. For years Jimmy served as his brother's caretaker, often at the expense of his own life and athletic career. After exhausting every possible effort to cure his paralysis, Buddy asked his brother to take him one final place - to Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the suicide doctor. In this Real Sports/Sports Illustrated collaboration, Jimmy Miley sits down with correspondent Frank Deford to recall the difficult decision to adhere to his brother's request and discuss his life since then.

Playing with Pain

Chronic injuries are common in the high-speed, high-impact world of professional and collegiate sports, and the pressure to play through the pain is intense. Athletes seek pain-numbing cortisone shots to get them off the training table, and rely on prescription pills to keep going through long, exacting seasons. Still, the pain often continues long after the season has ended, and before long, pills are no longer sufficient. Then, some athletes turn to alcohol or illegal drugs to ease the suffering. Correspondent Bernard Goldberg revisits this difficult subject and reconnects with former Carolina Panthers lineman Jason Peter to discuss his continued fight against addiction.
