Filmmaker Janine Hosking says she is asked all the time about whether she feels Schapelle Corby (pictured), the subject of her documentary 'Ganga Queen,' is innocent or guilty of smuggling marijuana into Bali, where she's been imprisoned since 2004. Hosking tries to remain objective, as she tells HBO.com: "I'd prefer perhaps not to go down the path of her innocence or guilt, but to say, 'Look, we've filmed her journey, her experience, during this quite horrific time for her.'" ![]() Holmes Boys
It's no mystery why Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are re-teaming after 'Talladega Nights,' though who could have guessed they'd step into the classically cobbled shoes of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Watson? With Cohen commanding the master detective's deductive reasoning and 'Superbad' producer Judd Apatow leading the investigation, it's a pretty safe bet that much pipe-smoking and eyebrow-wriggling is in the offing. Amanda Seyfried may be surrounded by a gaggle of attractive sister-wives on 'Big Love,' but in her new film role in 'Mamma Mia!' the 22-year-old gets some screen time in with a couple of choice leading men. She told People that Colin Firth was "sexy," but it was Pierce Brosnan who made her feel lucky: "Shooting in the summer of '07 on the 007 [sound]stage with a 007, that's one of the things he said to me, and I was like, 'You're right, I am lucky,' because he's a studly, studly man!" Finally, Amy Ryan will have something to talk about at Thanksgiving dinner besides crackheads and murder. The 'Wire' actress has taken a job as the new HR rep on NBC's 'The Office,' ditching McNulty's philandering for the loving idiocy of Steve Carell. "I don't know what they're going to do with the character," Ryan said, "but as it was written, there's certainly a lot of potential. It's a funny thing to enter a show that you're a great fan of and it's nice to tell lighter stories. I love the dark, grittier side of life, but it's nice to take a break from that, put a skirt on and brush your hair." Simon, however, has enough faith for the both of them, praising Wright's collaboration on the film. "There's stuff on the screen in all seven episodes that's not even in the book," he says. "It's from Evan's notes and Evan's memory." Whether Wright takes that credit or not, the Rolling Stone journalist copped to at least one contribution to the finished product after sitting through its military screenings. "The officers laugh in one portion, the enlisted guys laugh at other portions," he says. "But every time the reporter did something stupid, everybody laughed." When poverty, love troubles and the bottle get you down what's left to turn to? Some private detective work, naturally. Jason Schwartzman has signed on to play an underachieving writer in 'Bored to Death,' a new comedy pilot for HBO written by novelist Jonathan Ames. Overwhelmed by his life, Schwartzman's character decides to channel his heroes, Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade, posing as a gumshoe and taking on real cases. Some actors don't like to watch dailies because it makes them self-conscious. Jeff Garlin doesn't even like to see himself animated. For his star turn as Captain of the Axiom in the new Pixar film 'WALL-E,' Garlin says: "Besides seeing a drawing, when I saw the movie three weeks ago, I had no idea what I was in for. It's all rhythms. With animation, I just pick up the rhythm, that's all. I'm a big bowl of naturalism: I play variations of myself, I don't think about things too much, I just do it." People are still giving David Chase a hard time about the cut-to-black ending of 'The Sopranos' and he speaks out about it on the new release of the definitive 'Sopranos' collection in a DVD-extras interview. "If they were that devoted to the show and it meant so much to them, why would the guy who had invented it and given it to them say, 'Go (expletive) yourselves?' That didn't make sense. It was never that I didn't care about the audience. It's that if you always listen to them, you never had a center. People would say, 'There's too much violence; there's not enough violence; there's too much comedy; make it funnier.' How could you possibly do anything?" So much for omertà. Tony Soprano's unmentionables went on the auction block this week at Christie's and his boxers, wife beater, slippers and striped bathrobe jacked the bidding up to $21,250 that's about 20Gs over their estimated value. The highest ticket item was the blood-stained number Tony wore when Junior shot him, which went for $43,750. James Gandolfini was on hand to see $187,750 raised to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project to help soldiers injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. In jolly old England, there's nothing a spot of tea can't fix right up. After Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her performance in 'The Queen,' the matriarch of Britain invited her to the palace. When Mirren declined due to a bit of other stately business shooting 'National Treasure 2' the press went wild about how she dissed the queen. So when People magazine recently revisited the issue, Mirren set things straight: "I spoke to Buckingham Palace after I was invited and told them that I was filming in South Dakota and couldn't be in two places at once," said Mirren. "There was no snub and I would love to meet the Queen. It would be a great honor." Luckily, the queen has ears everywhere, and a few hours later the actress was pinky-pointing and nibbling cucumber sandwiches with Her Majesty. (photo: Jim Spellman/WireImage.com) |
