Down the Rabbit Hole

For Spike Jonze, making a film based on Maurice Sendak's children's book 'Where the Wild Things Are' wasn't enough of a trip — the director also decided to shoot a documentary about the story's author. Jonze explains: "Before we made the movie, he said, 'Don't pander to children, because they are smart,' and I think he is a force to be reckoned with. That is why I wanted to do a documentary on him."

As for those kids ... they took control of the project in their own way. "The set had lots of kids on it all the time," Jonze says. "I really wanted it to be a set where the kids felt they could go on any truck and play with anything, or they could go on a set that wasn't being used and make a movie themselves if they wanted to. The idea was, 'Let's have the kids all there and make it an experience for them that they could remember.'" (photo: Jordan Strauss/WireImage.com)

Mad Funny

Good news for all the freshly minted Aussie-philes who fell in love with Chris Lilley when 'Summer Heights High' aired on HBO: The comedian is working on a new 12-part series for HBO titled 'Angry Boys.' The show will turn Lilley's mockumentary lens on the troubled psyches of young men, so any fans of Jonah Takalua should find themselves in welcome territory, though Lilley says he has new characters on tap for the project. Work Crew

When it's your job to hang out with your buddies, how are you supposed to spend your free time? According to Adrian Grenier, his off-hours don't exactly resemble unreleased episodes of 'Entourage.' "We sometimes hang out, but not all the time," he says. "We are all adults and we have business of our own to attend to, and we don't necessarily want to spend all our time with each other because we work together so much." But that doesn't mean that the actor isn't carrying a little bit of Vince around with him all the time, in this case kind of literally: "I actually have all his clothes from last season and I wear them all the time." Blonde Ambition

Sam Merlotte isn't the only shapeshifter on 'True Blood.' When production started, Anna Paquin transformed from a porcelain brunette into ... well, Sookie Stackhouse. "She was written blonde in the books," Paquin says. 'And she's supposed to have blue eyes, but contact lenses would be a nightmare. She was meant to be tanned so they spray-tanned me, gave me a really good bra, some little tiny outfits, and away we go! The blonde just feels normal now. And the spray tan I still kind of really love, having been one of the palest pale girls on the planet." (photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

Speaking Off the Cuff

It's hard enough for an American actor to pull off a convincing Southern accent — let alone a Brit trying to channel the voice of a 173-year-old Louisiana vampire. So when 'True Blood' star Stephen Moyer auditioned for the role of Bill, all he could do was go with his gut. "At the screen test, I'd wondered about doing this generic American accent I'd done before, but when I got in there the casting director said,'You do realise it's Southern?' And I said, 'Well, we'll try it; if it's dreadful we'll go back to the other accent.' And she said 'Action' and out came... [he drawls]... kaahnd of Bill's thing. Once I got the part, I did some work with a coach. Everybody else in the show is doing a modern Southern accent, and I wanted something old-fashioned. There are no contractions. Bill never says can't or won't. It's always, 'I did not want you to do that,' which is funny because you then find yourself doing it in everyday life, saying things like, 'I cannot stand pains aux raisins.'"
