Mixing It Up

While the "vampire" crowd has traditionally been a pretty black-pleather-and-white-makeup bunch, 'True Blood' has managed to open the genre up to an almost weirdly assorted audience. "The fact is that there's no observable demographic," says star Anna Paquin. "Absolutely everyone and anyone seems to be a fan of the show. Usually I can pick what someone's going to say when they recognize me. This one, it's really random. Age, gender, whatever. It's great. 'Entourage' creator Doug Ellin has used his show to explore many of the perils of living in L.A., but one particular Hollywood nightmare of his won't manifest itself onscreen until one of the guys becomes a papa. "New Yorkers come to this place with — I don't think it's a jaded view, but an eyes-wide-open, skeptical view," says Ellin, who grew up in Merrick, NY. "That's why I wanted to cast all New Yorkers, and with the exception of Jeremy, they are all authentic New Yorkers. I hate talking about this, though, because my kids are from Beverly Hills, and when I think about them walking around town at 19 or 20 and saying they're from Beverly Hills, I shudder. 'Hung' star Thomas Jane has been landing work as an actor for years, but in his early days, he shared some common ground with his new character, Ray Drecker. "I saw most of my peers fail because they would rather be eating," he says. "Literally it came down to putting food on the table and having a table to put food on and not working in the business. So people became waiters and eventually the auditions got fewer and fewer. Whereas I quit every job I had every three months, I quit or was fired from. I never held a job for more than three months because mostly I was afraid it would turn into that f**king career." And in the end, it all paid off: Jane got the only career he ever wanted.
