Driven to Distraction

Wes Brown sort of stumbled into acting, discovering he enjoyed it when he was hired to do a Reebok commercial one summer during college (that never aired). A theater degree at LSU followed, along with gigs on independent films. The actor claims he's got a laissez-faire attitude when it comes to landing jobs. "I go in, do my best. Me getting the job is none of my business," he said. "If they don't think I'm right for it, I don't take offense." Still, when his manager called him with the news he'd landed the role of Jason Stackhouse's new frenemy from Fellowship of the Sun, Luke, Brown admits he lost focus for a moment. "I actually got so excited I forgot my car," he said. (photo: SGranitz/WireImage.com)

Art Therapy

Playing Pam the diva vampire can be a 16-hour-a day (or night) gig. Kristen Bauer balances her time on the set of 'True Blood' with painting — something that has been a vocation for nearly twenty years. 'Acting is an enormous collaboration, and art is the polar opposite of that," she explains. "When I'm painting...I only create what I want to create, every single decision is mine, and nobody gets any input whatsoever. It's silence, no one talks to you, nobody sees you.... Which is why I didn't become a professional artist first, because it's kind of lonely. But when I've been working a lot, I really need that quiet down time where I create something on my own to recuperate." (photo: Gregg DeGuire/WireImage.com)

Early Bloomer

Rutina Wesley may seem like she found success quickly, with fans already clamoring for more of her Tara in 'True Blood,' but the actress has been at it awhile. She attended New York's Julliard School, as well as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. But she got her real start even earlier in her home town of Las Vegas: "'Finian's Rainbow' and I was 7," Wesley explains. "My line was something like 'Last one down to Finian's Hill is nothing but a rotten vegata-bill!' ... I was a big old ham...pretty much did anything I could to get a laugh. Oh, the Humanity

Valerie Cruz is no stranger to working on blood-soaked shows after her recurring role on the serial killer drama 'Dexter,' but her heart really got pumping when she landed the role of 600 year-old vampire Isabel on 'True Blood.'

"I've always loved vampires, so I was really excited about doing the show." In fact, she adds, "You'd be hard-pressed to find an actor who doesn't get excited about the prospect of playing a character with this mindset that you live forever. The world just weighs on you differently, you know? In a sense they lack humanity, but in another sense there is a great humanness about them." (photo: Todd Williamson/WireImage.com)

She's Not All Bad

No one in Bon Temps is quite sure what to make of Maryann Forester, the town's strange new visitor. But Michelle Forbes, who plays the mysterious woman on 'True Blood,' has a few hints about her character's state of mind. "She is a woman who is all about appetite," she says. "She's not human. She has a definite myopic quest that she is on. And she is going to have one hell of a time achieving that quest. Maryann is definitely a character that's about perspective in the sense that she sees her goal as beautiful and blissful and of the divine and pure, so she doesn't consider what she is doing as being bad at all. It's quite a beautiful thing, and she's graciously allowing everyone to come with her. I don't perceive her as a villain." (photo: Todd Williamson/WireImage.com)
