Not-so Bitter Pill

You won't hear Alison Pill complaining about the tough work of learning 22 pages of dialogue a week to play cancer patient April in 'In Treatment,' opposite Gabriel Byrne. The actress thrives in such situations, largely because of her love for, and experience in, theater, particularly drama. "I'm more drawn to a depth of emotion — how far you can push it without losing your mind. And you do always lose your mind, at least a little bit," she says. "You can't live for four months in a world like that of Blackbird [an off-Broadway play she did with Jeff Daniels] without it affecting you. But other people have jobs like that — social workers see messed-up stuff, police officers deal with it every day. I don't have those skills, so I explore it this way." It's Raining Men

Guys are lining up for 'Sex and the City: The Movie 2.' At least to play the love interests. E Online reports that Chris Noth (Big), Evan Handler (Harry) and David Eigenberg (Steve) have all signed on to reprise their roles as three out of the four significant others. No word yet on who will be Samantha's plus one. (photo: Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Wicked Cool

Steve Van Zandt has started a new record label, Wicked Cool, but he's not under the delusion it's a get-rich scheme. "You couldn't imagine a worse time. So we thought we'd jump right in," jokes the musician-actor-rock evangelist. "It's fascinating as an intellectual challenge to try to figure out where it's all going. . . . Having said that, it's really difficult to imagine achieving my lifelong ambition of breaking even." His goal is a nobler one: to save rock-and-roll. "I think the biggest problem is how mediocre everything has become. . . . We've somehow wandered into this misperception that it's all about the art. And we've forgotten that it's all about the craft - which, accidentally, coincidentally, or by its own merits, evolved into art." (photo: Taylor Hill/FilmMagic.com)

Catching Up with Hines

Cheryl Hines was in Tribeca this week for the premiere of her directing debut, 'Serious Moonlight.' The film, starring Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton, was written by Adrienne Shelly, the filmmaker who made 'Waitress,' and who was murdered prior to that film's release. Shelley's husband Andy Ostroy asked Hines (who co-starred in 'Waitress') if she was interested in directing the film. Hines agreed, but knew she'd have to approach it her own way, rather than guess at Shelley's vision for the project. Still, there was one thing she did bring to the film that was all Shelley: "Adrienne was a lot of fun on set," Hines said. "Now looking back, I have no idea how she did it. I don't know how she directed a film and starred in it at the same time. But she always seemed to be having a very good time and really liked the actors and appreciated what was happening. ... And I wanted to bring that to 'Serious Moonlight.'" (photo: Kristian Dowling/Getty Images)

Bridge Support

Paul Weston may be new to Brooklyn, but Gabriel Byrne (who plays him on 'In Treatment') is enough of a regular to speak out on behalf of the borough's emblematic Bridge. The actor has thrown his support behind the DUMBO Neighborhood Association's attempts to thwart the building of an 18-story high rise near the Brooklyn Bridge. "This huge building will dwarf the Bridge on the Brooklyn side, causing irreparable damage to the Bridge's singular and majestic presence," DUMBO cited Byrne as saying. "This architectural and pioneering feat of 19th century engineering stands as a testament to American ingenuity and persistence, an iconic symbol of Brooklyn and the City itself."
