A Fair Shake?

Bill Maher's not exactly the poster boy for holy matrimony, so it's not too surprising that when news of Senator John Edwards' affair broke, the comedian was willing to stand by his man. "When somebody is caught cheating, of course, it's never an admirable thing to do," Maher told Larry King, "but I still think there's a giant lack of national perspective on this crime. I mean, you're married a long time. You know, you're desperate for something new. I mean, men like new sex. Women like new shoes. You know, people like new. You can't stop human nature. So okay, it's not an admirable thing to do. The noble thing to do when you're married is to suck it up and suffer. We all get that. Fine. But it's a shame that we have to lose a good message from an otherwise good man. He was the guy who had the health care plan that they both copied. His idea that we have two Americas, and in one of them he's single ..." (photo: Alexandra Wyman/WireImage.com)

Knock-Knock

The Cowboys' inviting HBO into their house to shoot the latest installment of 'Hard Knocks' makes for great television — but what's it like to have a nosy guest all through training camp? "You don't notice it," says Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. "After the initial talk, the players don't even notice it. You don't even know it's there. I'm in there talking about players, stadium issues, by the end of the day I can't even remember what I talked about, but I'm sure it's colorful." And all that talk adds up to about 200 hours of raw footage each week — a pretty big pool to go fishing in for great stories. "I talk to [producer] Kenny Rogers several times a day and he'll tell me we have a great story but I need a cutaway of this or a shot of that," says director Rob Gehring. "I have an idea of what's happening but its tough." (photo: Kirby Lee/WireImage.com)

Soldier Boy

Some actors worry about being type-cast, but when your "type" consists of a rifle-toting badass in 'Generation Kill,' 'Flags of Our Fathers' and the Broadway show 'Journey's End,' it's not such a raw deal. Or as Stark Sands puts it: "I've been lucky to play a soldier several times. I have an intimate respect for people who put their lives on the line in the name of service. Actual Marines have thanked me for telling the real story and not some Hollywood BS. It means so much because we made this for them." (photo: Todd Williamson/WireImage.com)

Byrne Is Picked for Peck

Gabriel Byrne will be picking up a film acting award (named after Gregory Peck) at the Dingle Film Festival next month. As the Festival director Maurice Galway explained the honor: "Gregory Peck once said that the secret of film acting is complete candor with the audience; when you let them see the real you — and this perfectly captures the essence of Gabriel in his many roles and makes him an ideal choice for this new prestigious award." Byrne noted: "It is an honor to accept an award in memory of a great actor whose work transcends time and continues to inspire." (photo: Jemal Countess/WireImage.com)

Blonde Ambition

How do you go from playing the mutant Rogue in the 'X-Men' movies, to sassy, telepatchic southern waitress (Sookie Stackhouse in 'True Blood')? Anna Paquin explains a lot of it was in the hair — and skin — color. "I get the spray-painting thing," she explained. "This is not a show where all the clothes stay on all the time, so there can't be tan lines in places that reveal that you're the palest girl on the planet." When asked if it she was able to pick up the waitressing skills in spite of a lack of experience taking orders, Paquin retorted: "Yeah, you know, I'm not actually stupid. Well, not quite as stupid as I possibly look now that I'm blonde." (photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com)

Rock of Ages

During Rainn Wilson's formative years, the actor rocked out to legends like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. When the 80s brought hair metal? Not so much. "They have nothing to do with art," he says. "It's just all about girls and partying and raging." Granted, this is coming from a guy who spent his teens playing Dungeons and Dragons and honking on the bassoon: "Not exactly a girl magnet." But now he's a big star, playing the leading role in 'The Rocker,' and has traded in the woodwinds for a drum kit out in the garage. "A heavy metal drummer is different than any other drummer," Wilson said. "It's more pyrotechnic, with lots of sticks tricks. The moves have to be larger. It's his job to pump up the audience." And by "audience," he totally means girls. (photo: Scott Gries/Getty Images)

Scientific Method

If Claire Danes thought high school was tough in 'My So-Called Life,' then she's headed for a whole new struggle in HBO's biopic about Temple Grandin, an autistic scientist who made strides in the humane treatment of livestock. During Grandin's teenage years, however, her classmates weren't so humane, calling her "tape recorder" because she repeated the same things over and over. But after earning degrees from several universities and blazing a trail in science, it looks like she got the last laugh. Danes is in negotiations to star in the film, which will be made by 'Live from Baghdad' director Mick Jackson. (photo: Daniele Venturelli/WireImage.com)

Presidential Pardon

Journalist Helen Thomas was the first woman to open and close a presidential press conference and she tells the story of how this came about in Rory Kennedy's HBO documentary 'Thank You, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White House.' "I could see President Kennedy was struggling," Thomas explains. "So, finally, I got up, and said, 'Thank you, Mr. President.' ... I got him off the hook." (photo: Theo Wargo/WireImage.com)

At Home on the Range

We've all heard about the arduous time comics spend cutting their teeth on the stand-up circuit. But Kristin Schaal got her early training from an even more reticent audience. She perfected the don't-let-them-get-you-down tenaciousness of Flight of the Conchord's number one fan Mel, growing up in the wilds of Colorado. "I had time on my hands," she explains. "I would perform in front of the cows. They never mooed. They never heckled. They were very polite. That's how I learned to not expect anything from an audience," she explains. "I went back home recently and I looked at the cows again and thought, 'God, they have the same expression as audiences.' Just expectant - they want something but they're just, like, waiting. And they have no idea what they're waiting for.'" (photo: Jason Merritt/FilmMagic.com)

Channel Surfing

Sure, Michael Phelps may be hogging all the attention at the moment, but 'Little Britain' creator David Walliams swam the Channel. He's not in it for the glory, though, so much as he's proud to have a non-offensive feather in his cap. "I know some of my parents' friends think Little Britain is in incredibly poor taste," he says. "But swimming the Channel? You can't really say anything negative about that, can you? ... I was quite fat as a kid. And swimming is a sport you can enjoy whatever size you are. I'm not really built for running. And football's not for me — I've got no coordination, so to kick a ball or catch one is really hard. Swimming's always been my thing and my family's thing. I feel people must think: 'We know he can swim — big deal. Let's see him get on a horse or climb Everest." (photo: Fred Duval/FilmMagic.com)
