On 'In Treatment,' Embeth Davidtz tried not to notice what her character Amy was going through in order to stay true to Amy's own personal blind spots. "In retrospect you analyze it and go, 'Wow, she's so damaged, she had to make so much trouble in order to feel loved or alive,' but during it we tried not to, because it was about analysis," the actress explains. However, in her real life, she's not one to avoid someone else's pain. Explaining why 'American Idol' is her favorite TV show, Davidtz says: "I'm obsessed with it. It's pure escapism, just a great antidote to the day. There's a weird catharsis in watching somebody else put through that." (photo: Jason Merritt/Variety via FilmMagic.com) ![]() Hot Off the Wire
When Idris Elba first moved to New York from England, he says, "I was on a well-beaten path of actors what we all call 'the Law and Order route.' I spent two years of auditioning for everything... and then 'The Wire' came up." Now on the cusp of A-list stardom with a lead role in Guy Ritchie's new film 'RocknRolla,' playing the love interest of Beyoncé in 'Obsession,' and doing a turn in the thriller 'Prom Night,' Elba is taking the road less traveled: "Actually, according to People magazine I'm one of the 100 most beautiful people in the world. I've had wedding proposals, and one girl even had a baby and named her son after me." (photo: Gary Gershoff/WireImage.com)

Not that anyone's starting a write-in campaign, but just in case, Denis Leary warns those who might be tempted that his platform will likely ruffle feathers: "I don't think they'd like my skinny-jeans squad. If I'm President, there are going to be government vans that drive around and pick up people who shouldn't be wearing certain clothing. Talk about lack of civil rights I'm sorry, I'm pulling you right off the street, and we're giving you clothes that you're going to be O.K. in. I don't know if the country is ready for it yet." "I wanted people to go back and forth about how they felt about him," said 'Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired' filmmaker Marina Zenovich of her controversial title subject. But after successful screenings at Sundance, New York and Cannes, response to her documentary has been anything but wavering. For the New York premiere the invitation was signed by 70 of the world's most notable directors, including Ang Lee, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

"Well, it's been a while," said Dana Carvey's alter-ego Garth Alger at the MTV Awards. However, if the "schwing" of the celebrity crowd was any indication, the comedian of many faces has been greatly missed since he and Mike Myers last got their 'Wayne's World' party on in 1994. An effusive Myers said after the awards ceremony, that Carvey, who can next be seen in HBO's June Stand-Up special 'Squatting Monkeys Tells No Lies,' is in top form. "We actually had a hard time rehearsing because it was all about getting caught up. I can't tell you how great it was to see him. He was just awesome." It's 'Sex and the City' meets the 'Sopranos'? We're not sure what that would look like but maybe we'll soon find out. Kim Cattrall will be exploring another side of herself in her new project for HBO, the half hour comedy 'Sensitive Skin,' being written by 'Sopranos' scribes Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess. The show is an adaptation of a BBC show but will be transposed to New York City, where Cattall's character, a wife and mother of a certain age, starts to question some of her life choices spurred by a rediscovery of her sexuality. Big may be Carrie's true love, but Chris Noth is playing the field. According to Variety, Noth has signed on to star with Renée Zellweger in the new comedy 'My One and Only,' based on a childhood adventure of actor George Hamilton. The film tells the tale of a young woman (Zellweger) who hits the road in search of a rich man to take care of her and her sons and meets a retired military doctor (Noth) who just may be the guy for the job. Alan Ball has been lured from his obsession with the dead ('Six Feet Under') and the un-dead ('True Blood') to exec produce a series for HBO about, well, a purgatory of sorts. 'Bad Girls' is an adaptation of a British drama about the inmates and staff of a women's prison. Also on the writing team are Nancy Oliver (Oscar® nominee for 'Lars and the Real Girl') and Raelle Tucker (co-producer of 'True Blood'). (photo: George Pimentel/WireImage.com)

As much fun as David Milch has had with cowboys, surfers and aliens/messiahs, his latest HBO series will be grounded in familiar territory for the 'NYPD Blue' creator. 'Last of the Ninth,' stars Jonah Lotan ('Generation Kill') as a young Vietnam vet undercover cop who is mentored by seasoned detective Ray Winstone ('Indiana Jones,' pictured here). The series will take place in 1970s New York, when the city's broke police department came under fire for corruption. Something also tells us the '70s will be noted as a popular time for swearing ... 'Recount' 's John Hurt thought he was being punk'd when he got a call from Steven Spielberg offering him a role in 'Indiana Jones,' but luckily something clicked before he hung up on the director. "I almost said: 'Yeah, pull the other one!'," he said. "Then I thought: 'Hang on, I recognize that voice. It really is him!' Not realizing that when Spielberg calls, you just say "yes," Hurt insisted on seeing the script. "They had to send a courier over from Los Angeles, who delivered the script at three in the afternoon, collected it at eight in the evening, stayed the night in a hotel and flew back to Los Angeles. It was a very expensive read." (photo: George Pimentel/WireImage.com) |
