Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the unfairest of them all? Arguably, Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris should take the hit as villain in 'Recount,' but Laura Dern's depiction manages to lend some humanity to the woman who found herself in the center of a storm, trying to please her party. Dern tells HBO.com she had to separate her personal feelings about what went down, from her job as actor. "You can have understanding and empathy for a narcissist and not respect their narcissism," she says. "It's a complicated relationship that I had, exploring her." (photo: Andrew H. Sure, the 2000 Florida recount was close, but that was nothing compared to the tight race that Jay Roach faced bringing 'Recount' in on schedule. As he told HBO.com: "I remember saying to HBO, 'You know some days I'm shooting eight scenes. I'm literally going to have to say to these Academy Award®-quality actors Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt, Kevin Spacey I'm going to have to say: Cut. Print. Run!'" Luckily, the actors were along for the ride.

Look out ladies of Wysteria Lane. It seems stay-at-home moms may be the new postal worker. Kelly Preston has signed on to star in 'Suburban Shootout,' a pilot for HBO about the rivalry between two gangs of homicidal housewives. Preston dives into the role of gang leader Camilla fresh from a stint starring in the Disney comedy 'Old Dogs' alongside hubby John Travolta and daughter Ella. Any respectable sex-columnist-turned-author understands that smithing her words on an everyday Dell is like strutting Fashion Week in a pair of Nikes it just clashes, honey. Luckily for Carrie Bradshaw, Apple saw fit to provide her with a sweet new MacBook Pro. And for 'Sex and the City' fans or just voyeuristic types who love snooping through email the film's website has made Carrie's sleek aluminum accessory available for exploration, providing a scintillating look through her iChats, iPhotos and iCals. It's being billed as "the Super Bowl for women." Just replace the cases of Miller lite, trays of nachos and nipple-baring half-time shows with pre-theater Cosmos and a shopping spree for a "Carrie" bustier or pair of "Miranda" tap pants to set the mood. According to the New York Times, women are buying blocks of advance tickets (who wants to stand in line in Jimmy Choos?) and jetting into major cities for group outings to opening night of 'Sex and the City: The Movie.' And the merch tie-ins abound; Mercedes, Skyy Vodka and Bloomingdales is hosting a series of lingerie parties featuring Cosabella's 'Sex' underwear line. George Lucas funded his entire 'Star Wars' franchise with light saber sales. Imagine the sequels that could be spawned by the expected run on "Samantha" thongs and "Charlotte" pajama pants. Usually, documentary directors prefer to interview the subjects of their works, but when Marina Zenovich kicked off 'Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired' by requesting a sit-down with the famous filmmaker, no reply came. "I never heard from him so I don't know whether he got the fax or not. Then at the end of filming, I reached out to him and tried to get him to do an interview and he said no. He thought that it would look like self-promotion, so he's not in the film," she says. But in the end after an off-camera chat with Polanski Zenovich decided he didn't fit into the film about his own life. "Actually, my executive producer Steven Soderbergh thought the same thing," she says. "He literally said to me, 'It's a mistake if you have Roman.' I knew that, but I wanted to do an interview with Roman because it'd be an interesting interview." (photo: Andreas Rentz/Getty Images)

Cynthia Nixon has survived a bout with breast cancer and the tabloid attention of leaving her husband for another woman. But it's her last name that may have been the toughest thing to endure. As she recently told the NY Times: "My mother always said her father was a German 'I lived through World War II with a father named Adolph and through the '70s with a husband named Nixon.' Horrible!" And her nickname didn't offer much relief. "I have a friend who sometimes calls me Bronty, short for brontosaurus, the dinosaurs with the really long necks. They have a new name now, apatosaurus." All the talented young actors on 'The Wire' must have made a real impression on Clark Johnson, who played City Editor Augustus Haynes on the show: He's decided to direct a short film written by nine Manhattan high school students. The juniors and seniors landed the opportunity to produce the film, which focuses on masculinity and youth, by winning a contest intended to teach kids leadership and self-expression. Johnson served on the committee that chose the winners, and he'll shoot the New York project with a volunteer crew. (photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage.com)

You know a premiere party is getting off the hook when they bust out the voting machines. After the 'Recount' screening, guests voted for Obama, Hillary and McCain on the famously finicky Palm Beach punch-card ballots. Obama won, but with three failed machines and a fresh pile of dimpled/hanging chads, the results are hardly certifiable. Will the real deal be any better? Kevin Spacey remains skeptical: "There's no doubt in my mind that this could happen again. Even if you went from a punch-card ballot to a punch-screen ballot, in which case, there's no paper trail. You couldn't do a recount. What was wrong with just checking a box?" (photo: Jason Squires/WireImage.com) ![]() Whiskey Tango
John Corbett didn't make the cut as one of Carrie's recurrings in 'Sex and the City: The Movie,' but he's not singing the blues more like countrified rock n'roll. The actor was recently bonding with Keanu Reeves, his co-star in the new film 'Street Kings,' about their mutual love of playing in bar bands. "[Reeves] says he misses going out and playing some stinky little joint that smells like pee and whiskey," Corbett said. "I do, too, believe it or not. If I come off the road for three weeks, I can't wait to get back out and smell that smell, man." Southern Californians can catch a whiff of the John Corbett band at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano this Thursday. (photo: Jeff Vespa/WireImage.com) |
