Bret and Jemaine had better slow their roll the way their new album is selling, they're going to spoil their 'struggling NYC band' image before season two even gets off the ground. The 'Flight of the Conchords' self-titled debut has sold 52,000 copies, rising to No. 3 on the charts and marking the highest rank for a comedy album since Steve Martin hit No. 2 in 1978. ![]() Fast Company
As if commanding a legion of nerd followers weren't enough, the Wachowski brothers also have the power to reel in an Oscar®-winning actress for 'Speed Racer' based on their reputation alone. "If you are going to do a big film," says 'Bernard and Doris' star Susan Sarandon, "these are the guys to do it with. Right? If you are going to do something really cutting edge instead of some old green screen movie, you should do it with the Wachowskis. ... After a few phone calls I said 'I don't even understand what you are talking about, but I'll do it.' They were telling me all the things they were doing technically I mean, I just learned to text like a month ago." Gina Gershon and Mary McCormack have a lot in common. Both actresses have appeared on HBO (McCormack in 'K Street,' Gershon in a recurring role as Larry David's dry cleaner on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'), both played Sally Bowles in the recent Broadway revival of 'Cabaret,' both are playing airline hostesses in 'Boeing Boeing' now on Broadway and both are serious meat eaters. On a night out with the NY Times after a recent performance, they proved their carnivorous leanings at a Brazillian restaurant where the meat is served up until someone cries 'Uncle.' Finally, the two parted ways. Gershon was willing to try bacon-wrapped filet, but McCormack drew the line: "That's like putting a hat on a hat." In an Us Weekly era when even twenty-something "It" girls can't hit the beach without guarding against unflattering paparazzi lenses, 'Sex and the City' star Kim Cattrall is glad to have some friendly coverage when it comes time for Samantha to ... well, be Samantha. "If you're going to do these kind of scenes at a certain age," Cattrall says of a scene in which sushi is served off her naked body, "I felt very blessed that I had someone like (director of photography) John Thomas lighting me and (writer-director) Michael Patrick King setting up the shots, because whatever the angle was, I felt protected. I felt my butt was covered." But don't let that give you the impression that this cougar is sweating her age she recently turned 50 and hasn't broken stride. "About two or three months before (my birthday) I was thinking, 'Oh my goodness, this is happening to me. I'm on the other side!' And I woke up the next morning and I said, 'Hey! I did it! Nothing happened! I feel exactly the same!' Even after walking in Katherine Harris's extremely high-heeled shoes, 'Recount' star Laura Dern hasn't let the former Florida Secretary of State's extreme party allegiance rub off on her. In fact, Dern points out that the film is so non-partisan that former U.S. Secretary of State Jim Baker and chief legal adviser for the George W. Bush campaign loves it. "He's hosting a screening along with Jimmy Carter," she says. "That says it all to me; they're very clearly declaring this is a non-partisan project. That ought to hush people up, hopefully. See it. Just watch it. This is what happens when you get disillusioned, sit [at] home and not vote. Your vote counts." (photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com) ![]() Slice of Life
It's hipsters meets gangsters in a pizza parlor. Vinny Vella (Jimmy Petrille in 'The Sopranos') has opened his own 'za joint in Brooklyn's enclave of hip, Williamsburg. Vella says everyone is welcome, from actor buddies like Michael Imperioli and Vincent Pastore, to the occasional ex-con and jewel thief. "These people, my friends, they might've done a little time for running numbers or something like that, but nothing big," said Vella of his pals from the old neighborhood who have dropped by for a slice at his eponymous pizzeria. "I mean, even I've been arrested once or twice." But he's mostly aiming to please his main constituency, the locals who fork over their dough for a piece of his pie. "The yippies?" said Vella. "They're all enjoying themselves, and they enjoy me and I enjoy meeting them." After blowing audiences away as Michael Lee on 'The Wire,' Tristan Wilds will be trading gun fights and row houses for popularity contests and McMansions. Slated to join the cast of The CW's 'Beverly Hills 90210' spinoff, Wilds will play Dixon Mills the new kid on the block from, of all places, Kansas. Luckily, his onscreen sister Shenae Grimes has already stomped the halls on 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' and should be able to show him the ropes. They say a little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing and Chiwetel Ejiofor ('Tsunami: The Aftermath') learned that's especially true when it comes to martial arts. To play a Jiu Jitsu teacher in David Mamet's new film, 'Redbelt, Ejiofor got a crash course with the sports' leading practitioners. "In a sense, even though this seems like I'm blowing my own trumpet, I was the most dangerous person because I knew such a small amount of it," he explains about filming the fight sequences. It took him awhile to realize that even a little guy can break someone's arm with some of these moves, and Ejiofor was underestimating his own strength. "Suddenly I became the one that everybody was very worried about, being the loose cannon. But there's a responsibility that goes with that and luckily I didn't injure anybody." It looks like Mr. G, the over-invested choral director from Australia's hit 'Summer Heights High,' has finally received some validation. Sales of 'Naughty Girl' his high-school-musical song about drug use and promiscuous sex have passed the 40,000 mark and earned the record gold certification in the land down under. "I'm beyond thrilled," Mr. G says. "I always knew I'd be huge but not this huge. I'm wearing my Gold shirt to school for a week starting tomorrow." He'd better not get too cocky, though; when 'Summer Heights' comes to the U.S. on HBO this fall, he'll have to sell another half million copies to transfer the honor stateside. Edie Falco's secret to a balanced life includes family and she's recently expanded hers, adopting her baby girl Macy in February (who joins adopted brother Anderson, age three). "Coming home to my family afterward makes the work richer, easier and more fun," Falco says. Those kids should come in handy when she goes into production on a new series for Showtime, playing an ER nurse. (photo: Brian Ach/WireImage.com) |
