Even though the Golden Globes are Ricky Gervais's favorite awards show ("it's really casual"), the winner of Best Comedy Series for 'Extras' was okay with finding out about his win via text message. "I can't really whinge about not having the chance to put a dickie bow on I always complain about it, saying 'Why have I got to put this on? Why is it starting at 3:30? Why is it 80 degrees?!'" ![]() Gotta Have That Funk
While most of Hollywood keeps the Prius assembly line rolling, don't be surprised if you catch Laura Linney in a gold-plated Cadillac. "I love 70's music," she says. "All that crazy funk stuff. I adore it ... People were not wearing much clothing. And it was a whole other era. There was a freedom and light and everyone wore color and then the 80's came and everyone wore black!" After noticing her own dark ensemble, she adds, "I still wear black." (photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ ![]() Self-Help
George Carlin's description of his upcoming HBO Comedy Special almost sounds like an inspirational proverb: "The main focus of the show is the bulls**t that Americans live every day. It's all bulls**t, folks, and it's bad for ya." Too bad he doesn't actually care about you. "Sometimes I get asked if I try to make people think," he says. "I say NO, capital N, capital O. That would be the kiss of death, to set out to make people think. But what I want them to know is that I'm thinking." Christine Lahti became famous for being in the bathroom when her Golden Globe® was announced but Samantha Morton has one-upped her: She was in bed. "I woke up this morning, my partner turned the phone on and there was a text from my publicist saying 'Congratulations you've won the Golden Globe®." Granted, this was because the awards were announced at a press conference due to the Writer's Guild strike, but even so, Morton might have been taken by surprise by her nod for playing Myra Hindley in HBO Films' 'Longford.' "I thought the Globes were some time in February. I didn't know they were going to do a press conference at all. I had a baby on 4 January, so I've been in another head space completely." Kicking off any event at the local Bass Pro Shop with a raffle drawing and taxidermy show pretty much guarantees a good time. Top that with midget race cars, an indoor clay track and brutal qualifying rounds that carve 285 entrants down to 24 drivers, and the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals start sounding like a great reason to visit Oklahoma in the dead of winter. The 10,000 fans in attendance, joined by tens of thousands of home viewers on HBO Pay Per View, witnessed the victory of Damion "The Demon" Gardner. One of the champ's predecessors, Tracy Hines, explained the proper seasoning: "You need a good car, good driving skills, and luck. The fastest car is not who wins the race." ![]() Stumped
Barack Obama has the voting base of gay, shotgun-toting gangsters locked down for the Democratic primary. The presidential candidate stated in an interview with the Las Vegas Sun that he's a fan of 'The Wire,' and has a soft spot for Omar. "That's not an endorsement," Obama qualified. "He's not my favorite person, but he's a fascinating character....He's the toughest, baddest guy on the show, and he's gay. It's really interesting, he's a fascinating character." We'll leave it to the pundits to analyze what that means for American voters. (photo: Jemal Countess/WireImage.com) ![]() Perrey Reeves at Access Hollywood's "Stuff You Must..." Tony and his crew have taken over the one-armed bandit market. Gone are the days when granny dropped a quarter in, pulled the lever and waited with bated breath to see if she hit with three cherries. These days the gaming industry provides state-of-the-art experiences like the new 'Sopranos' machines that allow you to watch video clips while you navigate three "mystery-style jackpot levels." You think with more winning combinations, maybe all of your money won't stay in Vegas? Fugghedaboutit. (photo: Douglas Park/Aristocrat Technologies Inc.) ![]() Apt Pupils
For all those students out there borrowing massive loans for film school, 'The Wire' offers some hope that you won't be paying them back with a Wal-Mart salary. Seith Mann's student film from NYU, a short titled 'five deep breaths,' garnered enough attention at Sundance (and won Best Narrative Short at L.A. and Chicago festivals) to earn him a shot at directing 'The Wire' during its fourth season. He continued to direct through the final episodes, and the lead of 'five deep breaths' also caught a 'Wire' break: Jamie Hector now plays drug lord Marlo Stanfield. Who needs glamour, anyway? Even with the stripped-down Golden Globes'® announcements, HBO still led the night with six awards more than any other network. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored Jeremy Piven of 'Entourage' and 'Life Support' star Queen Latifah, while 'Longford' actors Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton both took home the gold. And just in case Ricky Gervais needed one more feather in his cap for 2007, 'Extras' won best television comedy series. (photo: Gregg DeGuire/WireImage.com) ![]() Nanny Entourage
Forget rolling with your boys, nannies are the new entourage. Drea de Matteo ('The Sopranos') joined her boyfriend the musician Shooter Jennings and their daughter Alabama Gypsy Rose for a night out with the NY Times last week. Their entourage included both Jennings' and de Matteo's childhood nannies, plus Alabama's nurse along with de Matteo's parents and friends. The former mob snitch admitted to the Times that she and Jennings have had a wild ride: "We've done some crazy things together...but this baby's the craziest thing we've ever done. I never knew it could be so much fun." (photo: Mark Sullivan/WireImage.com) ![]() Cutty Does Time
When former drug dealer Dennis "Cutty" Wise got out of prison, he opened a boxing gym. But actor Chad L. Coleman, who plays Cutty, is still doing time at the Park Slope Co-op, an organic food cooperative where all of the members have to put in a certain number of hours of work each month. Coleman explains that success on 'The Wire' is great, but it hasn't negated the need to get a discount on hormone-free chicken. "We all eat, sleep, breathe, and we all have lives to take care of, regardless of the celebrity or notoriety or whatnot," he told the NY Times. " 'What are you doing in the co-op?' Well, my family's in the co-op. My wife would kill me if she couldn't get her organic food." (photo: Albert L. If Jermaine Crawford is recognized, he admits, it's for the role of Dukie on 'The Wire.' But the 15-year-old 6' 2" triple threat (he sings, dances and acts), is looking to play a very different character for his next role. So far he's been offered a lot of similar parts but he insists he's not like Dukie. "Well I definitely don't stink for starters," Crawford told Boxing Scene. "But one of the major differences between us is that Dukie was too willing to let things slide, like when other characters got in his face, he would just kind of back down. I'm more the type to stand up, not necessarily throw down, but get in your face and let you know what's up, at least enough to where a situation never really gets beyond that, and also so others know they can't just have their way with me." (photo: Jim Spellman/WireImage.com) ![]() Fearless Leaders
'Sopranos' capo di tutti David Chase has a few things in common with another famous boss. When a reporter asked 'Sopranos' star and E-Street Band member Steve Van Zandt to compare Chase with his bandleader, Bruce Springsteen, the insightful consigliere found a lot to say: "They're both crazy and uncompromising and singular in their visions. And they both have been very, very inspirational to me. Whenever you sort of falter and you feel like, 'Jeez, maybe I should compromise a little bit,' you look at those guys ... They don't care. They don't do any marketing research. They just have a vision, and they're going to realize it." (photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com) |
