In one distinct way, the women of the world fall neatly into two categories: those who appreciate the majesty of chest hair, and those who do not. When 'Extras' star Ashley Jensen spoke to Esquire magazine, she professed the beliefs of her camp: "We think that a man who even considers waxing his chest should go skin a rabbit or make a fire from two sticks. The same goes for waxing your eyebrows. Unless you are a drag queen or a transsexual, in which case it's fine." (photo: Jesse Grant/WireImage.com) ![]() Pressing Her Buttons
As 'John Adams' star Laura Linney enters her 40s with more praise for her work than ever, she's not sweating the bias the film industry seems to hold against ladies of a certain age. "I feel excited," she told the Boston Globe. "Other people seem to be very afraid for me ... Particularly journalists. Almost every journalist I speak to now, that's a major topic. It's interesting: As opposed to saying, 'Oh hurray, you're getting better,' it's 'Oh boy, you might expire soon.' It's an odd cultural thing." If you thought Ed O'Neill seemed tough as Bill Jacks on 'John From Cincinnati,' he's even more of an ass-kicker in real life. The actor has spent 15 years studying Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and recently received his black belt. In an interview with ProElite.com, O'Neill grappled with the issues facing the Ultimate Fighting Championship, offering a pretty hardcore assessment: "I'm a big fan. But the rules changes I realize they're necessary for fan excitement but with those big padded gloves, you could punch a barn door and not hurt your hand. In the street, you can't punch like that with your bare hands." (photo: Jesse Grant/WireImage.com) ![]() Summer Stock Equity
Lauren Ambrose is building equity in the awards bank. The actress has been named one of the recipients of Actors' Equity's Joe. A. Callaway Award, given to one man and one woman each year for work in a classical play. Ambrose got the nod for her portrayal of Juliet in the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production of 'Romeo and Juliet' this past summer. Journalist and former Vanity Fair and Talk magazine editor Tina Brown is turning her attention to the small screen. Brown has signed a first-look deal to bring projects and story ideas to HBO. She told the NY Post: "I loved and admired the network for a long time, so the chance to work for HBO was too good to pass up." Lisa Kudrow has more to offer than the occasional prat fall. Playing another friend in the new film 'P.S. I Love You,' Kudrow knows how to make the blonde sidekick (this time to Hilary Swank) unpredictable. But the star and co-creator of HBO's 'The Comeback' thinks Hollywood needs to be more brutal and take more risks with their portrayal of women, especially in comedies. "It's like [movies and TV] have to be careful" Kudrow says. "So if [women are] anything other than reasonable, then [it's] insulting ... you end up with a lot of women whose only 'flaws' are they're kind of clumsy, and that's their only comedic skill." Having wrapped filming for 'Sex and the City: The Movie,' Chris Noth is back to work at 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent,' where the suits are cheap and the grooming is DIY. "I have to trim my eyebrows with a lawnmower they grow so fast," Noth said. But aside from that, he's at a loss about what looks are au courant: "What about nose hair? Is that in?" Perhaps he's too busy preparing for the arrival of his first baby, a boy, with girlfriend Tara Wilson. When asked what names they were considering, Noth joked: "Little Big." Drum role please. JDate (the online dating service for Jewish singles) has named their '2007 Person of the Year' and, in a neck-and-neck race beating out Sarah Silverman, Seth Rogan and NYC Mayor Bloomberg, the winner is....Larry David. But it doesn't sound like David will be putting his free JDate membership prize to much use. "My only condition in accepting this award is that I don't have to go on a date." He's been voted Sexiest Man Alive and been fêted at the Golden Globes® and Oscars®, but George Clooney isn't happy. "Don [Cheadle] and I . . . stand here before you as failures," Clooney said to the guests at the opening of a three-day summit in Rome with Nobel Peace Prize laureates. "The simple truth is that when it comes to the atrocities in Darfur, those people are not better off now than they were years ago. The murders continue, the rapes continue and some 2 1/2 million refugees are yet to go home." ![]() Pre-emptive Strike
The Writers Guild of America tossed everyone a curveball on Wednesday when they released their list of WGA Award nominees early, but for a number of HBO shows, the announcement came right on time. 'The Sopranos' and 'The Wire' both received nods for drama series, and fledgling comedy 'Flight of the Conchords' doubled up with nominations for both comedy writing and best new series. 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and 'Entourage' rounded out the list with comedy-series recognition. (photo: Shawn Ehlers/WireImage.com) ![]() Global Leaders
The Golden Globes have rolled around again, and, as has become the fashion, HBO is at the top of the heap with 18 nominations. 'Best Series' nods went to 'Entourage,' 'Big Love' and 'Extras,' while many HBO stars were singled out for their performances. Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven from 'Entourage' both caught the nomination for their supporting roles talk about bringing the drama. (photo: Theo Wargo/WireImage.com) |
