'Wire' star Andre Royo didn't have to suffer any withdrawal symptoms when his character, Bubs, cleaned up for season five, but the actor shared in the shock of suddenly becoming a new man: "It's a hard reality check to deal with when you walk out of a rehab place and are expected to jump into a different lifestyle," Royo told TV Guide. "It was very weird playing Bubbles as officially clean. I didn't know what to do. I've been Bubbles for so long that I had to start from scratch. In a way, it was very uncomfortable." While comedian Dave Attell may appear more concerned with keeping late hours than long ones, the comic has actually earned a reputation as a laborer on the club circuit. In an interview with Punchline Magazine, however, he made it clear where he draws the line: "I used to read that before [Jerry Seinfeld] did Letterman or something, he would start jogging and training for it like it was a fight. That always stuck in my mind. That wasn't me. I wouldn't do anything like that. I try not to drink the night before a big show." She may be playing the title role in François Ozon's 'Angel,' but Romola Garai ('As You Like It') claims she's anything but. As her screen career takes off, Garai faces the challenge of believing her own press, and she explained the pitfalls of the celebrity interview to one of her interrogators at TheAge.com recently: "... what happens is that you become a certain way to please people, to be liked, to be what's expected of you, to change yourself so that you become the best possible version of yourself for people who don't know you. And I think that's a terrible, pernicious thing." ![]() Death Takes a Holiday
As Stringer Bell on 'The Wire," Idris Elba failed to extricate himself from the drug-dealing life, but Elba wasn't sad with his premature demise. "They took one of the most celebrated gangsters on TV that we've seen in a long time and shot and killed him at the height of it. So, to me, that's good," Elba explained. Still, after dying in 'American Gangster,' as well, he's done with death. "I don't like dying in films actually. When I see it, I'm always disturbed by it. So I want to stop doing that I think." Felicia "Snoop" Pearson has written a memoir, 'Grace After Midnight,' that tells the story of how she went from Baltimore drug-dealer to playing a character (based on herself) who Stephen King has called "the most terrifying villain to ever appear in a television series." Pearson survived being a crack baby, a teenaged drug-dealer and a prison inmate before meeting the producers on 'The Wire' changed her life. As she writes in the prologue (the book is "as told to" David Ritz) "Just want to make sure other people know my story, especially the kids on the streets and the kids working the corners. Just want to let them know that you can get over without killing people and selling packs." (photo: Soren McCarty/ ![]() Kiwi the New Aussie?
When Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts came to town, the whole world was abuzz about the Aussie Invasion. Well, it looks like the land down under is about to go the way of the hyper-color T-shirt. "Kiwi's are in," says 'Flight of the Conchords' star Rhys Darby. "They love us. I don't know whether they are laughing at us or with us, but they are paying us, so we are taking the laughs as they come." ![]() Kim Cattrall and Alan Wyse attend the Knicks vs. Suns game at New York's Madison Square Garden. Ian McShane is back on Broadway, following the stagehand strike that delayed the opening of the revival of Harold Pinter's 'The Homecoming.' Talking to Time Out NY, the actor drew parallels between the famous Pinter pause and the Swearengen swearing. "Pinter considers himself a poet, and it's poetic the words work perfectly. It's like with [series creator] David Milch: The swearing on 'Deadwood' was quite deliberate. If you put one f**k in the wrong place, you were f**ked. It was all very carefully calibrated." Cheryl may have dumped Larry on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' but it seems she has other options, and not just the No Fly Zone guy. Actress Kerri Russell, who co-starred with Cheryl Hines in 'Waitress,' says Hines is: "the best thing going. She's hilarious. I was just with her last night. She's so funny. I have a girl crush on her." (photo: George Pimentel/WireImage.com) ![]() Man of the People
Comedian Don Rickles' 'Mr. Warmth' has proven that he's a much nicer guy than his insults would lead you to believe, but the 81-year-old funnyman admits that he's still kind of a lousy date: "When I go to a restaurant, my wife always says, 'Are you going to talk to me or talk to the waiter all night?' I take pride in being a people person. If I'm walking down the street with Clint Eastwood, people are afraid of approaching him, but they've got no problem coming up to me and saying, 'Hey, you hockey puck.'" He's not cashing in the 401K yet, but 43-year-old Brad Pitt has announced that he may be retiring from films in the near future or at least keeping his bare derriere away from the camera's view. "I don't want to be embarrassed when my kids get old enough to see my films," Pitt told US Weekly. "I can't see any more nude scenes [in my career.]" The actor figures he has a few films left, but only ones he's very interested in. "I think it's a younger person's game." Instead, he's turning his attention to producing projects, like the series on humanitarian workers he's working on with Angelina Jolie and HBO. (photo: Jon Furniss/WireImage.com) ![]() Trading Blows
The Mayweather/Hatton verbal assault has entered a new arena with the fighters answering fans' questions in online interviews. And the English challenger is looking pretty confident: "I fight the truth," Hatton says. "I don't take a backward step I'm not gonna do it against Floyd. I don't see me losing this, not one bit. In all the dreams I have, not once have I seen me losing." |
