Working Girl

How did Amy Ryan — who plays cop Beadie Russell on 'The Wire — react when she snagged a role as a hooker? "I couldn't get the smile off my face," she says. Perhaps we should have mentioned that Clint Eastwood is directing the flick, called 'The Changeling,' which also stars Angelina Jolie. "It was like getting invited to the adult table at Thanksgiving," Ryan says. "It was strange to have a conversation with Clint Eastwood. You wanted your best friend to be standing there to turn to (and say) 'Can you believe this? ... My God, this is cool.'" (photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.com)

Jeff Garlin supports the writer's strike

The pen is mightier that the sword — or is it? With film and television writers laying down their writing implements, just what are they going to do with all that free time? Jeff Garlin had an idea. To show his solidarity, Garlin arrived at a 3000-plus rally of picketing scribes in Los Angeles last week, bearing gifts for idle hands: porn videos for everyone! The Devil Wears Sevigny

Since when is a porkpie hat made of recycled cassette tapes the new black? Since style maven Chloë Sevigny is getting into the clothes designing business. Her eponymous line for Opening Ceremony will debut in February, and it will include the aforementioned haberdashery. Fans of fashion will also eagerly wait to see just how her backless cropped pink sweater holds up and whether there's anything to her sheer black Jody Whatley-esque dress.

Quizzed about the item of clothing she can't live without, Sevigny played it safe. "A gray cardigan. I like the oversized men's styles, slightly Mr. Rogers, preferably long enough to cover my ass, and with pockets I can shove my hands into when I get nervous in social situations, which is a constant." But in her new line, the item she's most proud of: "Probably the shoes. An ankle wedge can go so far — it's limitless." (photo: Donato Sardella/WireImage.com)

Crime Pays

Timothy Olyphant has racked up quite a rap sheet over the past year and a half. After playing a cyber-terrorist in the latest 'Die Hard' and a contract killer in 'Hitman,' the star of 'Deadwood' has laid plans to pull a bank job in the upcoming film 'High Life.' But the odds of walking away with cash are stacked against him, thanks to the crew of incompetent criminals lending a hand in the film, which was adapted from the Lee MacDougall play, 'Seven Times Lucky.' Thrill Seeker

Plutonium or man-eating crocodiles? It's not a choice Radha Mitchell had to make. In HBO Films' 'Pu-239,' she plays the wife of a man who suffers a lethal accident at a nuclear power plant and decides to sell some plutonium to provide for his family after he's gone. And in the Ausie horror film 'Rogue,' Mitchell had to learn how to drive a boat through croc-infested waters, much to her co-star Michael Vartan's dismay. "Michael had just come out from America and was scared of spiders, snakes — all animals really — so it was a new experience for him," she says, bravely.

But Mitchell's biggest thrill comes from seeing her image on the 'Pu-239' billboard in Times Square: "That's exciting, you get a real buzz out of it." (photo: Eric Charbonneau/WireImage.com)

Culture Shock

Kevin McKidd has navigated ancient society in 'Rome' and hurtled through time and space on 'Journeyman,' but lately he's found something even more disorienting: Moving his family to Los Angeles. "It has been a big adjustment for us all," he says, "because we are used to quiet country living in Bedfordshire near London, which has kept us safe and sane — as it was when we all moved to Italy for 'Rome.' The kids are now in school in the (San Fernando) Valley and seem to enjoy it. I guess the biggest adjustment is not using public transportation and walking everywhere. I see why people here go to gyms." (photo: Jason Merritt/FilmMagic.com)

Cosmo Girl

Ashley Jensen was named Ultimate Woman on TV at Cosmopolitan magazine's Ultimate Women of the Year Awards in London — and she didn't even have to come up with the Top 10 Ways to Please Your Man. "It's a magazine that I've read for years. I have little moments where I go 'oh my God.' I can't believe I'm here and I've been nominated for an award for this magazine that has been the trend-setter for so many generations of women, it's very exciting." Spacing Out

Step aside, Shatner. The real captain has beamed up to the bridge. Bruce Greenwood — fresh from a possibly-alien encounter on 'John From Cincinnati' — will step into the spandex suit of Captain Christopher Pike, the mythical first captain of the Starship Enterprise. Pike, who didn't make the cut when NBC picked up the series light-years ago, has peppered the franchise with a few appearances, but this latest Trek installment from J.J. Abrams marks Pike's first treatment as a major star. (photo: Steve Mack/FilmMagic.com)

Singing Sopranos

You're making your debut in a lead role in a Broadway musical and you only have eight days to rehearse. No, it's not an anxiety dream. It's the challenge facing Aida Turturro and Vincent Pastore who are getting ready to step into the roles of Matron "Mama" Morton and Amos Hart in the musical 'Chicago,' on Broadway. The Buzz caught up with the actors just as they were heading into their second day of rehearsals.

Since the pair are coming in as replacements to a show that's already open, the Actor's Equity rules limit the amount of rehearsal time they can have. "Normally when you do a play, you go through the whole process with everyone. Everyone's opening together, has nerves together. We're being thrown in," explains Turturro, who admits to trepidations about performing in her first musical. "Whenever I start anything, I'm a nervous Nellie," she says. "Because I care. It's important. The show is excellent and I want to come in and be on that level."

Turturro is fulfilling a lifelong dream, so the pressure is high. "Growing up I used to watch old movies with my grandpa and I loved the musicals. I was a big Judy Garland fan. My whole life I wanted to stand on that stage and sing. When I did 'Streetcar' 15 years ago, I'd sit on the stage and sing — but that was to the ushers."

How did Janice Soprano and Big Pussy end up singing and dancing on Broadway together? "It's a gangster orientated play," explains Vincent Pastore. "It's about crime, murder, sex. It's Soprano-ish. I'm sure they felt we were going to draw a 'Sopranos' audience." But you can expect to see a different side of Pastore, who's playing the role of Roxy's duped husband. "It's two totally different characters. Amos is a pussy. He lets his wife walk all over him. That's why he calls himself Mr. Cellophane Man," says Pastore, referring to his big song and dance number from the show.

But both actors are looking forward to their run (November 19th - January 13th). "It's one thing to tape something and it comes out six months to a year later. But the experience of doing something live every night with different audience reactions — that's what I'm really looking forward to," says Pastore. As for Turturro: "Right now I'm just concentrating on wanting to do a good job. I think once I get up there I'll be fine and enjoy it more." She adds, laughing. "I will be happy when I open my mouth and it comes out right."

And will there be dancing? "No dancing," says Turturro. "I might shake my butt a little bit, but that would be too many new things all at once."

Quid Pro Quo?

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg handed over his keys to the city so Sarah Jessica Parker and company could shoot the 'Sex and the City' movie, and now Reuters is reporting that the mayor will appear in the flick. Not the first head of the big Apple to 'Sex' it up, Bloomberg follows his predecessor, Ed Koch, who popped up in a 2001 episode of the show. (photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.com)
