Drew Barrymore will be playing Little Edie to Jessica Lange's Big Edie in HBO's feature film adaptation of the documentary (and then Broadway play) 'Grey Gardens.' The two Edies are the mother and daughter from the Bouvier clan who lived in a dilapidated mansion in Long Island's East Hampton. In 1971 the police raided the house finding the women living with no heat or water amongst cats, raccoons, and garbage. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis paid to have the place cleaned up for her aunt and cousin. (photo: Jesse Grant/WireImage.com) ![]() Susie Cue
It only takes a glance at Susie Essman to trigger Larry David's laughter when they're shooting 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.' "As soon as I look at her, I know she's going to call me a name or whatever, and I just lose it. It takes me like five takes," David told the crowd at New York's 92nd Street Y who had gathered to see Essman interview David. ![]() Norton Anthology
There's some funny business going on with the Jackson-George Regional Library System and the first amendment. When one of the branches received a complaint that comedian Jim Norton's best-selling book 'Happy Endings: The Tales of a Meaty-Breasted Zilch,' was obscene, the book was pulled from the shelves, pending review. The library board will determine next steps, which could include returning the book to the shelves or putting it in a reference-only section according to a library spokesman, who also claimed the book had not been banned. Whether the ending is happy or another big zero for Norton will be determined when the board meets on September 25th. Emmy statuettes are cool and all, but let's not forget the real draw of awards shows free stuff. The swag gods smiled upon Rex Lee, who plays Lloyd on 'Entourage,' granting him a $6,000 getaway to Cancun. And it looks like Dr. Melfi will be making L.A. house calls after 'Sopranos' star Lorraine Bracco landed $4,000 worth of private jet time, along with a free coast-to-coast ticket from Virgin just in case she wants to spend five hours chatting with strangers about the 'Sopranos' ending. When Jemaine Clement tried to woo Sally his on-again, off-again girlfriend in 'Flight of the Conchords' with a first-date kebab, he may have been chasing the wrong gal. Ashley Jensen ('Extras'), who has relocated to LA for her role on 'Ugly Betty,' recently told a UK paper: "I'm not into being seen at all these hip places. I'd much rather have friends over for some wine and fish kebabs." (photo: Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage.com) ![]() Untold Story
On Nov. 22nd, 1963, 8-year-old Bill Paxton went with his brother and father to see President Kennedy at a local appearance in the Paxtons' hometown of Fort Worth, Texas just hours before JFK was assassinated. More than four decades later, Paxton is teaming with HBO and Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to make a mini-series based on Vincent Bugliosi's acclaimed book 'Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy.' Bugliosi aims to reverse the widely held perception that there was a conspiracy to kill the president. ![]() Bret McKenzie, Kristen Schaal and Jemaine Clement at the HBO after party for the 59th Primetime Emmy® Awards. 'Tell Me You Love Me' star Ally Walker wasn't in any rush to parade around in the buff on camera for the first time. But after overcoming her trepidations, the actress found a silver lining: "I am a middle-aged woman, and I don't really want to run around in front of the camera nude. I've had three kids. I have a hard time getting to the beach you know what I mean? If I was to be really candid with you, I would say I kinda feel proud about the fact that I get to depict what a normal woman of my age is like, with all its cellulite and stretch marks." There was a lot of mob talk at the Emmy® Awards on Sunday night. First, James Spader, who beat out James Gandolfini for lead actor in a drama series, announced: "I feel like I just stole a pile of money from the mob. And they are all sitting right over there." When David Chase accepted the award for drama series, he tried to humanize his characters, but may have backed himself into a corner. "In essence, this is a story about a gangster. And gangsters are out there taking their kids to college, and taking their kids to school, and putting food on their table. And, hell, let's face it, if the world and this nation was run by gangsters ... maybe it is." (photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.com) ![]() The Trouble with Harry
Evan Handler will be reprising his role as Charlotte's husband, Harry, in the new 'Sex and the City' movie, and he's only sad he won't have more screen time. "Harry doesn't feature that prominently," Handler told People magazine. "So, I mean, I'm there, but it's their story." The actor has been out in Los Angeles, where he'll be returning in the spring to shoot a second season of 'Californication,' and he's eager for a change of scenery. "I'm looking forward to spending some weeks in New York. It should be fun." (photo: Chris Polk/Variety via FilmMagic.com) ![]() Perrey Reeves and Daveigh Chase at the HBO Emmy® party. When Jeremy Piven pulled down his second Emmy® for playing Ari Gold on 'Entourage,' the actor had no problem accepting praise for work he put in the can more than a year ago: "I would receive something for something I did in junior high school and quite honestly take a victory lap and hold a press conference. Do you know what actors are?" ![]() Extras Credit
Ricky Gervais racked up some 'Extras' credit for his Emmy® as outstanding lead actor in a comedy series on Sunday night, but being marked absent almost cost him the prize. When presenters Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert announced Gervais as the missing winner they decided to opt for plan B: "Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight. Instead we're going to give this to our friend, Steve Carell." Carell, who had been nominated in the same category for playing Gervais's doppelganger in the American version of 'The Office,' gladly obliged, waving the trophy in victory. HBO's 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' received five Emmys® at the Creative Awards and a sixth for Outstanding Made for Television Movie on Sunday. According to producer Dick Wolf (pictured here with one of the film's stars, Anna Paquin) this means one Emmy® for every year it took to get the film made. "This was the icing on the cake," he said afterwards. "We were six years at HBO. This was a labor of love and a labor of conscience." After the gold dust had settled, HBO took home a total of 21 Emmy®'s between the Creative Emmy® Awards and last night's ceremony, including best drama series for 'The Sopranos.' It was the first time in three decades that a departing drama series won this "walk-off" award, according to Variety. (The last being 'Upstairs, Downstairs' in 1977.) Show creator David Chase (left, with Steven Van Zandt) was modest in his appraisal of the show's influence. "I don't think we've had that much of an impact. There's something unique about it." But he was touched by the audience response when the winner was announced. "The best part of it was the huge standing ovation that our cast got. That was really amazing, and it was really fitting." As usual, the 'Entourage' guys rolled to the Emmy awards ceremony as a pack, but you could be seating Kevin Dillon, who plays Johnny Drama on the show, at your own swank soiree. According to Defamer.com, $15,000 will book Dillon for a personal appearance Vince, Turtle and E not included. (photo: Mathew Imaging/FilmMagic.com) ![]() Madness to her Methods
Sonya Walger may not be doing headstands as Carolyn on 'Tell Me You Love Me,' the 30s woman desperate to get pregnant, but as the actress discovered in researching her role, such contortions are not so far-fetched. |
