Moral Fiber

Letting the Blacks take over her home on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' hasn't deterred Cheryl Hines from volunteering for good deeds in real life. Teaming up with Larry King to promote heart health — and raise money for his cardiac foundation — Hines served up cholesterol-busting oatmeal to New Yorkers. She hopes to convince 250,000 people to adopt the diet, raising a dollar a head in donations from Quaker Oats. (photo: Alexandra Wyman/WireImage.com)

Liar, Liar

Ricky Gervais is not only co-directing his first feature, he'll be starring in 'This Side of Truth.' The film is about a world where no one has ever lied — until Gervais' character comes along and uses a lie to turn his career around. "My character works in the film industry, where actors are really readers who tell completely factual stories," Gervais said. "My character's a loser who's about to lose his job, and who's lumbering through the 1300s. All he's got to work with is the Black Death. But once he lies and pretends he's found lost stories, he becomes the greatest storyteller in the world." The film is being produced by Lynda Obst, who may have been drawn to the subject matter; she's the author of the Hollywood tell-all, 'Hello, He Lied.' (photo: Gary Gershoff/WireImage.com)

Red Flag

We knew Ian McShane must have a twisted sense of fun from the way he could spit out c**ksucker like nobody's business on 'Deadwood.' But his latest film role may trump Swearengen. It's a remake of Roger Corman's 'Death Race 2000,' directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and produced by Tom Cruise. In the original, cross-country racers scored points for hitting pedestrians. "This is even more violent," McShane told Empire Online. "This is set in the future, it's like NASCAR to the death inside prison. On TV. And I play the guy who runs the race, coaches the racers, from inside prison. It's a lot of fun." (photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic.com)

Foster Family

Emily Rose, who played Cass on 'John From Cincinnati,' has caught her next wave on the ABC family drama 'Brothers and Sisters.' But her new character may not receive a much friendlier welcome than Cass got in Imperial Beach. As Lena, Rebecca's high-school friend and a new employee of the Harper family business, Rose is poised to cause problems during her eight-episode run. (photo: Jesse Grant/WireImage.com)

Bullseye

In the new film 'The Inner Life of Martin Frost,' Michael Imperioli plays Fortunato, a guy who plays a round of screwdriver darts with the title character Martin Frost (played by David Thewlis). The film is the third project written and directed by novelist Paul Auster (his other films were 'Smoke' and 'Lulu'). Imperioli praised the scribe's directing skills and "precise language" for communicating with his actors, but added. "It wasn't all work and no play, though. [Auster is] extremely intelligent but he can laugh at somebody getting a pie in the face."

Luckily Imperioli didn't have to get clocked with a tarte tatin to get a chuckle. As Auster explained to NY Press: "Michael [Imperioli] was wonderful to work with. In the rehearsals, we refined Fortunato a lot. He was a little larger and more bombastic at first, and we kept toning it down. And the more we kept toning it down, the funnier it got....when we were rehearsing, no one could stop laughing." (photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.com)

But Does She Take Dictation?

Jennifer Hudson, who wowed audiences in 'Dreamgirls' with her rendition of 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going,' has signed on to play the assistant to Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw in the new 'Sex and the City' movie. No word on whether the Oscar® winner be playing a trash-talking assistant who won't hesitate to tell her boss to answer her own damn phone. Or whether Hudson will be silencing her inner diva to fetch her boss non-fat lattes. (photo: Jim Spellman/WireImage.com)

Clear Off the Mantle ...

HBO took home 15 statues at the Creative Arts Emmys® — the ceremony honoring behind-the-scenes television talent. Spike Lee's Hurricane Katrina documentary, 'When the Levees Broke,' earned him recognition as director and also won awards for editing and exceptional merit in non-fiction filmmaking. 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' led the HBO pack with five awards, including makeup, editing, cinematography and sound mixing and editing. (photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage.com)

Maher Kills in Toronto

Bill Maher takes on religion's big three (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) with his new "pan-offensive" documentary 'Religulous,' directed by Larry Charles ('Borat'). "People who say they're religious say they're humble, but they're arrogant, because they say they have all the answers," said Maher at a screening of clips from the film at the Toronto International Film Festival. Charles added, "Most movies poke gentle fun (at religion). We stab it to death." (photo: Malcolm Taylor/WireImage.com)

Loose Lips

Apparently Larry David doesn't have a corner on improvising. Kate Towne, who plays the spirited Mason on 'Tell Me You Love Me,' told BuddyTV that it wasn't until she loosened up her performance and her lines that show creator Cynthia Mort was happy. "I came in and I would be reading my lines and doing my stuff, and she was kind of like, 'OK, fine,'" explains Towne. That is until they shot a scene where she goes into a strip club ... and Towne started riffing. "I finally do a lot of lines that was like, 'Who do I have to suck around here to get a lap dance?' And then she was like, 'Great! That's great, that was like the auditions, good. Moving on, very good.' And I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm on HBO.' ... You know that kind of thing could get you fired over at NBC, and that's what was keeping me at HBO." (photo: Amy Graves/WireImage.com)

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Justin Timberlake is still on tour so he wasn't on hand Saturday night to receive the award for best original music and lyrics alongside Adam Samberg for their 'SNL' hit, 'Dick in a Box,' but Samberg gave him a shout out. "I think it's safe to say that when we first set out to make this song, we were all thinking 'Emmy!'" Samberg said. "The other thing we were thinking was, 'Hey! Here's this young up and comer, Justin Timberlake, who is clearly very talented and could clearly use a break ... So, Justin, if you're out there, congrats to you, kid." La Cuisine Nostra

Steve Schirripa retired his Bobby Bacala fat suit after getting clipped on 'The Sopranos,' but with a new cooking show heating up, he might pack on a few real pounds. Debuting on the on-demand network Lifeskool, the show will follow New York native Schirripa to his favorite restaurants, cheese stores and butcher shops in the city before heading to the kitchen. "It's going to be a mixture of comedy, history (of foods) and of course the cooking part and the stuff about lifestyle," Schirripa says. "I'm a regular guy, and this is regular food for the masses. Whether you're here in New York or in St. Louis or Ohio, you're going to relate to it." (photo: Jason Merritt/FilmMagic.com)

The Naked Truth

Sonya Walger, who plays Carolyn, a woman struggling with her husband to get pregnant on 'Tell Me You Love Me,' spoke to HBO.com in depth about her decision to take on this revealing role. "Intellectually and morally I made my peace with it very quickly," she explained. "But when it comes to actually showing up on set and taking your dress off — it's a big pill to swallow, I've got to tell you!" Still, it wasn't in the sex scenes that she felt the most naked. "There's a therapy scene [towards the end] that was pretty devastating. I remember coming home and just going to bed for the rest of the day. I think we all had at least one day like that where it just hit such a nerve."

She reports that her boyfriend has been very supportive and eager to see the show, but thought they'd watch it during a quiet evening at home. "I'm not in a rush to show pizza parties for this show," she said, laughing. "I'm happy to take calls from friends afterwards." (photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage.com)

All Too Real

Ralph Anwan Glover, known as Baltimore gangster Slim Charles on 'The Wire,' accepted his role as a lifeline from the dangerous streets of Washington, D.C., and has since extended an out to other neighborhood kids through community work with the Peaceoholics. In a cruel turn of fate, however, Glover's youngest brother was gunned down on August 23. "This has kind of ripped a part out of my heart," Glover told Newsweek in an extensive interview, "cause I was pretty hands-on with my brother. I watched him grow up. Put him in the bath, you know? Took him to school, fed him."

In the wake of the murder, Glover redoubles his emphasis on reaching out to kids in the city's toughest neighborhoods: "We just got to keep on talking to the youth. You can't just talk because my brother was killed, you know, talk about it for a month or two months. You got to keep constantly doing it, constantly doing it." (photo: Dexter A. Rock and a Hard Place

Edie Falco may find herself having to dodge questions at her next gig. The actress has signed on to do a three-episode guest appearance on '30 Rock,' and the show's star and creator Tina Fey has suggested there might be an ulterior motive to her casting. "We're thrilled to have such an amazing actress come join us," Fey said. "Also, a lot of guys on our crew want 'The Sopranos' ending explained to them." (photo: Alexandra Wyman/WireImage.com)
