Another Side of Bacon

Kevin Bacon — who will star in 'Taking Chance,' an upcoming Iraq war movie from HBO Films — has returned to work on the home front, this time behind the camera directing his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, on her TNT hit, 'The Closer.' Of the show's upcoming season, Sedgwick won't divulge much: "We're going to talk about something that I don't think any other show has spoken about — but I'm not going to tell you what it is!" Goal Keeper

Dermot Mulroney knows the score

Playing the father of the soccer-obsessed family in 'Gracie,' Dermot Mulroney's character is so caught up with his son's success that he barely notices it's his daughter who has potential to be the breakout star athlete. Having grown up on the East Coast, where Mulroney says the competitive spirit is strongly encouraged, he can relate. "I heard of a soccer league that doesn't even keep score. It seems to me that whether the parents are keeping score or not, trust me ... Those kids are keeping score."

Mulroney adds: "Competitiveness is natural. The reason why it exists, is the same reason we have molars and we have hair on our heads. We evolved. Its survival of the fittest. It's in our primordial make-up. Competition exists for a reason. .... So you can either stick your head in the sand, or keep score with your son's soccer game." Meet the Parents

As if doll fever and Academy Award® nominee Abigail Breslin weren't enough to attract a mob to 'Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Mystery,' the depression-era project just got a leg up with recent additions to its star-studded cast. Julia Ormond and Chris O'Donnell will play Kit's parents, and Joan Cusack signed on as a nurse staying at the Kittredges' boarding house. (photo: George Pimentel/WireImage.com)

This Old Whore House

It's not often you can attend the ribbon cutting ceremony at your local bordello, but that's just what the residents of the community of Mound House, Nevada got to do last week when owner Dennis Hof unveiled the first round of renovations at the Moonlite BunnyRanch.

The legal house of prostitution is the star of the HBO documentary series 'Cathouse.' As Hof, who spent $50,000 on the renovation so far, told the crowd: "I'm the Boy Scout of the sex industry — I'm a businessman who's here to do what's right and invest my money back into Mound House." Sad Clown

Living in polygamy on 'Big Love' doesn't faze Ginnifer Goodwin — it's the emotional scars from her days in greasepaint and suspenders that have yet to heal. The actress told Details magazine that, when she flunked out of clown school at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, her instructor turned up his rubber nose at her skills. "It's such a painful memory," she says. "My teacher told me I was the worst clown he'd ever seen." (photo: Michael Loccisano/FilmMagic.com)

Coming Soon

Will it be 'Bee Movie,' 'Fast Food Nation,' 'Grindhouse,' 'Little Children,' or 'Smokin' Aces' that walks away the winner when the dust settles tonight? Susie Essman will let the crowd know, as the host of the Golden Trailer Awards in New York City, honoring the best movie trailers of the year. With 50 trailers nominated in ten categories, we predict a lot of "In a World..." jokes. (photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.com)

Jersey Boy

Andrew Shue has had no regrets about giving up his acting career. He left 'Melrose Place' for Princeton New Jersey, to raise his family and focus on his non-profit work — Do Something, which funds youth groups and the web-based www.clubmom.com. "It's MySpace for moms," says Shue. "We're signing up 3,000 moms every day."

He does play the soccer coach in HBO Films' 'Gracie,' the film he made with sister Elisabeth and brother-in-law Davis Guggenheim, but that's just because the film, inspired by the death of the Shue's older brother, was a personal, passion project. He's happy to be settled in the state he grew up in. "I love Jersey," he says. "There's a great diversity here. You have mountains and beaches, farmlands and cities. You also get a sense of the real world. Jersey is perfect in its imperfections." (photo: Jean-Paul Aussenard/WireImage.com)

Who's Your Daddy?

McShane brings the pain

When SNL comedian Andy Samberg started shooting the new comedy 'Hot Rod,' co-star Ian McShane injected a dose of 'Deadwood' toughness into the act. During the film's fight scenes — the stuntman hero and his father engage in weekly bouts for superiority — Samberg says McShane doled out a lot more than acting advice: "Pretty much every time we would rehearse or shoot any of the fight scenes in the basement with the fighting sticks and other stuff, he would just nail me every time!" Leading Lady

Anna Paquin is pleased to be telling the stories she's involved in these days. Of HBO's 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee,' in which she plays frontier teacher Elaine Goodale, who falls in love with the assimilated-against-his-will Native-American Charles Eastman, she says: "I hadn't actually read the book. I grew up in New Zealand, where we have our own tragedies, but I knew of the story, and I really, really, really wanted to be a part of telling this story ... I don't think enough people actually know what happened back then."

She's also playing the lead in the new Southern vampire series from Alan Ball. "I would say it's a not-so-subtle metaphor for ... you know, pick your minority group," Paquin told NY Magazine. "They use the expression 'Came out of the coffin," so there could be parallels with homosexuality or whatever..." (photo: WireImage.com)

Killing for a Laugh

Dane Cook feels perfectly at home on Boston Garden's giant circular stage, but stepping onto the set of 'Mr. Brooks' with Hollywood's A-List talent threw him for a loop. "You can't ignore William Hurt," he says. "He's got, like, the Force. He could flick me out of a scene if he wanted to. But Kevin [Costner] has that same demeanor. Demi [Moore], too. These are the elite. I am a confident guy, but I also knew that I was going to experience things with them, since it was my first time at that level, and just shut the f**k up." Brother Clancy Brown

He may have used his pulpit to carry out evil as Brother Justin Crowe on 'Carnivale,' but in real life, Clancy Brown is using his fame for a good cause. The Clancy Brown Fan Club Charity Internet Auction concludes on May 30th, when all proceeds will go to the Beth Brown Memorial Foundation, a scholarship fund in his older sister's name (she died of juvenile leukemia in 1964). The auction includes 101 items, ranging from scripts, to behind-the-scenes photos and other memorabilia. (photo: John Heller/WireImage.com)
