Homies

Rachel Griffiths may have a new hit TV show ('Brothers and Sisters'), but that doesn't stop her from envying her fellow Ausie's careers. "I really do envy Toni [Collette] and Geoffrey [Rush], who manage to live their lives in Australia," Griffiths told Autralia's News.com. "In my ideal existence I'm in Australia with the option to come here to do one project a year and one back at home...I really miss Aussie theatre, so what I'm really hoping is that 'Brothers And Sisters' buys me a bit of freedom back there to do that stuff."

Meanwhile, her 'Muriel's Wedding' costar, Collette, was in town for the Golden Globes® — as a nominee in for both Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for 'Little Miss Sunshine' and Supporting Actress in a TV Series, Mini-series or Movie for HBO's 'Tsunami: The Aftermath.' Even before the ceremony, she wasn't concerned about winning: "It is not about that (winning awards) at all. It never has been for me and never will be. It will just be a fun night and it will be nice to hang out with my mates." (photo: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.com)

Sports Knight

Olyphant takes on sports radio

Timothy Olyphant may be busy with film and TV roles, but he still finds time to read the sports — on the radio. Asked in a recent interview with Moviehole.com about how he got involved with LA's 103.1, Olyphant explained that, already a fan of the show, he'd gone in to do some publicity for 'Deadwood' and the next day, decided to call in with sports news.

Seven months later, he's still got the gig. But rather than waste time writing his own copy, he explains, "I just read the paper [laughs]. I wake up in the morning and lay out the sports page in front of me and pick up the phone. ...And, other than that I could also just tell them that my brother scored a 270 this weekend at the golf course. ...I do sports and David Lynch does the weather and I'm not joking." You can check out his reading chops online Monday thru Friday. (photo: John Sciulli/WireImage.com)

Par for the Course

'America's Mexican' George Lopez is a hit at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic

While most golf fans are coming out to Palm Springs, CA to watch golfing greats like Phil Mickelson and Robert Allenby compete in the 48th Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, a lot of folks are here to catch a glimpse of comedian George Lopez, a 13-handicapper and host to the PGA sponsored pro-am event (pictured here with fellow celeb-golfer Oscar De La Hoya).

"We're definitely Lopez fans," says Hugo Ramirez, who with his wife drove out from Huntington Beach for a chance to meet the Mexican-American funnyman. And Lopez didn't disappoint as he interrupted putting practice to say hello. "He totally made my day, I'm so happy. I got his autograph," said Rosie Ramirez.

The event is going so well for Lopez, whose HBO Comedy special 'George Lopez: America's Mexican' debuts Saturday, Feb. 22, he joked about receiving a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. But, "I have to put it in myself. I'll probably do it in front of a Jiffy Lube or Del Taco." (photo: Mike Guastella/WireImage.com)

Carpet Burn

Life on the red carpet can get you coming and going. Bill Nighy (nominated for a Golden Globe® last year for HBO's 'The Girl in the Café' and nominated this year for 'Gideon's Daughter') said of his arrival: "I always forget how looney it is. You get out of the car, see the red carpet and you want to go back to the hotel and have a lie down."

But the stars grinned and bore it. Even when their names weren't read aloud as the envelopes were opened. Bill Paxton, who was beat out by Hugh Laurie for the Best Actor in a Drama Series category, was optimistic about the future for 'Big Love': "This is going to be our year. We were just delighted to get these nominations," he said, dubbing the event "a high holy night meets a prom night." Even Jeremy Piven, whose heart must have skipped a beat when the winner's name was read in his category, "Jeremy....Irons," wasn't ruffled. "I'm happy to lose to Jeremy Irons," he said. "My mom loves him." (photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com)

Madonna and HBO Get Hosed

The Material Girl's Maverick production company is teaming up with HBO Films on a new feature, 'Hosed,' starring four of the 'Jackass' gang. Chris Pontius, Steve "Steve-O" Glover, Preston Lacy and Jason "Wee Man" Acuna will play a group of misfit firefighters whose firehouse gets a new volunteer firefighter who possesses a deadly combination of uncoordination and overenthusiasm. But don't worry — it's a comedy. (photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/WireImage.com)

Dubious Distinction

Jeff Garlin's road to success had a lot of potholes, as actress-writer Annabelle Gurwitch reveals in her book 'Fired!: Tales of the Canned, Canceled, Downsized, and Dismissed' (her new doc 'Fired!' opens in NY on Feb. 2nd). "It was my idea that people could learn from experts in rejection, and that's people in show business," she told the NY Post. But the dubious distinction of Most Fired goes to the actor who now, ironically, plays the man who gets Larry David jobs on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.' "Jeff Garlin holds the record," says Gurwitch. "He's the king of fired. He was fired 13 times in one summer from shops up and down the mall. He was fired as the host of 'Fire Me, Please!' I mean, that's crazy." Three Golden Globes for Borat

Sacha Baron Cohen may have trumped the historically fast-and-loose pantheon of Golden Globe® speeches when he accepted his trophy for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. "I saw some amazing, beautiful, invigorating parts of America. But I saw some dark parts of America, an ugly side of America. A side of America that rarely sees the light of day. I refer, of course, to the anus and testicles of my co-star, Ken Davitian," he told the crowd, referring to the scene in 'Borat' where he wrestles with Davitan. "Ken, when I was in that scene and I stared down and saw your two wrinkled golden globes on my chin, I thought to myself, 'I better win a bloody award for this.'..."

Backstage, a more subdued Baron Cohen gave a basic lesson in all things Borat. "The movie is mocking Borat's beliefs. All his beliefs seem laughable — whether he's homophobic or misogynistic or anti-Semitic, they're all seen as forms of delusion," he said. "He doesn't just think Jews are good with money, he thinks they can change their shape into little insects. And the point of that is to show that all prejudice is ridiculous." Imperioli's Entourage

It's been 16 years since he played in a band, but Michael Imperioli has decided to pick up the guitar again. The Emmy®-winner recently joined his alternative rock band, La Dolce Vita, at Brooklyn club Southpaw, where they played before a full entourage of fellow 'Sopranos' (John Ventimiglia, Steve Buscemi and Steve Schirripa) and 'Entourage' star/fellow musician Adrian Grenier.

The Tribeca resident says he was prodded to get back into music more by 9/11 than the end of his hit series. "Life is obviously short, and I've been wanting to do this for so long," he told GO Brooklyn. In addition to the guitar, Imperioli takes turns on vocals and wrote a few of the band's songs. (No newcomer to the pen, Imperioli has written five episodes of 'The Sopranos'...not to mention Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam.')

He cites Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices and Courtney Love as inspirations, but his material is now arranged by bandmates Elijah Amitin and Olmo Tighe. "I'm not doing this for any other reason besides I found guys I really like to play with, and I'm passionate about what we create." (photo: Bobby Bank/WireImage.com)

Cold Play

It was uncharacteristically chilly in Hollywood for Golden Globe® weekend but the stars braved the cool nights to attend a slew of parties, including HBO's annual pre-Globes gala at the Chateau Marmont on Saturday night. The party was packed according to reports, including Elizabeth Snead of the LA Times who wrote: "Talk about rubbing elbows with the stars. It was SO crowded Saturday night that by 11 pm, I was rubbing way more than that against all the famous guests there as I tried to manuever around the hotel dining area, lobby and outside heat lamped sofa and bar areas."

Rub-worthy luminaries included nominees Helen Mirren, Jeremy Irons, Toni Collette, Bill Paxton and Sacha Baron Cohen. Other HBOers were there as well, such as 'Entourage''s Emanuelle Chriqui, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, Debi Mazar, and Perry Reeves to name a few.

To accommodate the crowds at the Globe afterparty (where nominee Sophie Okonedo was in attendance), HBO installed a giant floor over the pool of the Beverly Hilton Hotel — in an uncharacteristic attempt to avoid making a splash. (photo: Alexandra Wyman/WireImage)

HBO at the Golden Globe® Awards

HBO's 'Elizabeth I' took home three Golden Globes® last night, including Best Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Helen Mirren won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television and Jeremy Irons was awarded Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Busting out of the Compound

She may have been through a lot as the oldest daughter of polygamist Bill Henrickson on 'Big Love,' but that's nothing compared to Amanda Seyfried's latest film role. In Nick Cassavetes new film 'Alpha Dogs,' she plays a beer drinking, pot-smoking teen who ends up in a hot tub at one point with her kidnapper — played by Justin Timberlake.

So how did method man Cassavetes prep his actress to play the sex interest of the man who brought sexy back? "I had to pretend to smoke weed and drink beer (actually herbal cigarettes and water)," Seyfried explains. "We went through a weird three-week training camp to get us acquainted and get us in shape — we had to box and lift weights and everything. It was fun but grueling. But we all became pretty close after that." (photo: Lester Cohen/WireImage.com)

Zen in Rome

"Women come up and say they love my character," says Ray Stevenson (right), who plays the fearless, hot-blooded Pullo on 'Rome,' "although they find him a bit violent — they say it tongue-in-cheek — but the guys really connect." As for Vorenus, "Women said to me, 'Whoa, you're kind of harsh to your wife,'" Kevin McKidd (left, that's exec producer Bruno Heller center) recalls, "but as their relationship unraveled and they started to have genuine love for each other, the female reaction seemed to shift."

The actors told USA Today that they've learned a few things from their alter egos. Pullo has given Stevenson a more "Zen outlook." "Pullo doesn't look around and think 'Vorenus is a senator, maybe I should be a senator.' He says, 'Vorenus doesn't look too happy.' ... Actors are fraught with insecurities. We're always thinking 'George Clooney's having a great career and why can't I get a movie?' It's absolutely ridiculous and pointless. What happens is, you're missing the life you have."

As for McKidd, watching Vorenus sell out his ideals with each financial gain, he sees a lesson for anyone. "What you get through outward success isn't necessarily what you want or need." (photo: Lee Celano/WireImage.com)

Shrinkage

Lifetime is getting into the Lili Taylor business. Movieweb reports that the cable network announced its new series 'State of Mind' will star Taylor as "a brilliant, take-charge therapist whose personal problems rival those of her eclectic and offbeat patients." In the pilot, written by psychotherapist and best-selling writer Amy Bloom, Dr. Ann Bellows (Taylor) discovers her husband is cheating on her with their couples therapist. Suddenly the shrink needs a shrink. Luckily she's surrounded by them in the rambling Victorian home that houses her office — as well as several other therapists. The show's Executive Producer Greer Shephard calls the show "... a wonderful creative opportunity to show therapists' lives from a real therapist's point-of-view."
