Phil Spector  A Timeline

The Teddy Bears

1958  At age 17 Spector formed The Teddy Bears with classmates Marshall Lieb, and Annette Kleinbard. Their hit, To Know Him is to Love Him, reached #1 on the new Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. They disbanded in 1959.

The Crystals

1961-1962  In 1961, Spector and promoter Lester Sill formed Philles Records with Lester Sill, a former promoter. The first group he signed, The Crystals, who made the charts with Theres No Other (Like My Baby). Spector bought out Sill the same year and was a millionaire by age 21.

The Ronettes with Phil

1963-1967  At Philles Records, Spector invented his famous Wall of Sound created by large groups of musicians (sometimes orchestras), playing in unison and recorded in an echo chamber. The Crystals Da Doo Ron Ron and The Righteous Brothers Youve Lost That Lovin Feelin are a few examples.

Spectors label produced 18 Top 40 hits, classics including The Crystals Hes A Rebel (#1) the Ronettes Be My Baby (#2), The Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody (#4), and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah (#8).

In 1964, Tom Wolfe wrote an article for Esquire, dubbing Spector The First Tycoon of Teen.

Phil and Ronnie

1968  By the end of the 60s, Spector withdrew from the music scene and the public eye, as he grew dissatisfied with the direction of popular music. He married Veronica Ronnie Bennett, the lead singer of The Ronettes, in 1968.

Phil and George Harrison

1970  Spector was coaxed out of retirement to produce the Beatles final album, Let It Be. He went on to co-produce John Lennons single Imagine, and George Harrisons first solo album, All Things Must Pass and his live album, Concert for Bangladesh in 1971.

1974  1975  In March of 1974, Spector survived a near fatal car accident, suffering serious head and face injuries, requiring more than 700 stitches. According to Spectors biographer Dave Thompson, Spector took to wearing his famous wigs in effort to hide the scarring.

Shortly after the accident, Spector formed the Warner-Spector label, recording artists such as Dion, Cher, and Harry Nilsson. The label only existed for three years.

The Ramones

1977-1980  Spector's last major productions were Leonard Cohen's Death of a Ladies' Man (1977) and the Ramones' End of the Century (1980).

Phil Spector 1989 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

1989  When Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, he gave a speech in which he accused several artists of plagiarizing his work, including Bruce Springsteen.

Murder of Lana Clarkson

2003 - 2007  On February 3, 2003, police arrived at Phil Spectors mansion in response to a 9-1-1 call. He was arrested on the scene and charged with the murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson. The trial began March 19, 2007.

2009 - Present  The second murder trial began March 26, 2009, and on April 13th the jury delivered a guilty verdict. Spector was sentenced 19 years to life in prison. He is currently serving his sentence in Corcoran, California.
