Interview - Susie Essman

HBO
So you don't prefer any one season over the rest. Do you have a favorite episode?

Susie
"The Doll" is my favorite episode. People come up to me on the street all the time and tell me that it's their favorite episode, too. And it has my favorite Susie Greene moment. The moment in the driveway when Larry and Jeff come up the driveway, that spaghetti western music is playing, and there I am with my arms crossed and saying "Where's the head? Get me the f**king head!"

HBO
"Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia!"

Susie
Exactly! That is my favorite Susie Greene moment in all five seasons of Curb. I also think it's one of the most perfectly crafted half-hours of comedy in television history.

HBO
What about this season? There've been a lot of great episodes.

Susie
I think all of our acting has gotten better over the past five seasons. We're like a well-oiled machine in terms of our improvising techniques. There is a dialogue of the unconscious going on. We're in synch in a very unconscious way with one another.

HBO
Fewer of those wonderful fourth-wall-breaking smirks at each other's line readings?

Susie
Larry still does that off-camera all the time. He ruins all my best takes!

HBO
If you had a sandwich named after you at Leo's deli what would be in it?

Susie
I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat fish. So the Larry David sandwich would have suited me. But I hate onions! The Susie Sandwich would be grilled vegetables and hummus on some kind of focaccia.

HBO
What about a Susie Greene sandwich?

Susie
Susie Greene is definitely a meat eater. So probably roast beef and brie on a club roll.

HBO
Do you still keep a tally of your standup appearances?

Susie
I stopped. It wasn't conscious -- I just realized one day I forgot to keep a tally. But I haven't been doing as much stand up for the past few years anyway.

HBO
You're in the feature film "The Man" and got to work with SNL veteran Eugene Levy.

Susie
Eugene is great, I love Eugene.

HBO
And you were in the documentary "The Aristocrats," in which you give your own version of a scatological joke that has become infamous amongst comics.

Susie
Yes, Paul Provenza called me up and asked me to do it, and I had never heard the joke. I'm not a joke teller. They just shot me in my living room and it was the most casual thing--no hair and makeup.

HBO
Who do you think gave the best rendition of the joke?

Susie
Gilbert Gottfried did; his was the funniest in the whole movie.

HBO
Let's talk about who influenced you as a comic.

Susie
When I was young I never thought I'd be a stand up comic. There wasn't as much standup comedy on TV the way that there is now. But I listened to the comedy albums my parents had and the one that influenced me most was the Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner album, "The Two Thousand Year Old Man." I used to listen to that over and over again, and then I would stand up on the kitchen table and recite it word for word. Both Mel's and Carl's parts. So it was absolutely thrilling for me to get to meet Mel last season.

HBO
And you've also had the opportunity to work with comedy legends like Shelly Berman and Louis Nye, who unfortunately passed away earlier this year.

Susie
I was very sad when I heard he died. When I read his obituary, I was surprised to find that he was 92 years old. The last time I worked with Louis was three years ago and he didn't seem like an eighty-nine-year-old then to me at all. He was so funny--such a pleasure to work with.
