Some thank their agent, some thank their mom, but if Timothy Olyphant ends up winning an award for his impressive turn as ex-marshal Seth Bullock in the new HBO drama series 'Deadwood,' he just might want to thank his cable guy. "A year or so ago, I moved into a new house and got cable for the first time in my life," Olyphant says. "And I was watching this show-- the first season of 'The Wire'-- because my friend Dominick West was in it.
I watched two, three-- I think by the fourth episode, I was writing him a letter telling him how fantastic the series was, how great his performance was," Olyphant says. "After I finished, I called my manager and I said, 'I know we haven't really looked at anything on television in a few years. But if something comes up on HBO as good as this show, please, please don't turn it down.'"
His manager surprised him by saying he had a script for a western on his desk at that very moment. "I think I met with David Milch two days later, and the whole thing was done by the end of the week," he says. Now Olyphant, who grew up in California and is familiar to fans from roles in 'Go,' 'Gone in Sixty Seconds' and the recently opened 'The Girl Next Door,' will be occupying his buddy West's timeslot on Sunday nights.
"It's a dream job," he says of 'Deadwood,' "It's exceeded all my expectations--and my expectations were pretty high."
