Four films accepted to Sundance, another in competition at Cannes, two films in production, in addition to her appearances as the irrepressible Aunt Sarah on HBO's Six Feet Under. And now: an Oscar® nomination.
This has been one busy, incredible year for Patricia Clarkson.
"When I'm on subzero energy, I have to remember that a lot of little films just go away," she says. "I mean, you shoot these small films, and you never know what the hell is going to happen-- and suddenly, they go to Sundance, they get great distributors, and two are coming out within two weeks of each other. How amazing is that?"
Her performances in those two movies, "Pieces of April" and "The Station Agent," have been winning overwhelming praise from critics; "Pieces" netted her an Oscar® nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the judges at Sundance awarded her a Special Jury Prize for Outstanding Performance. Both were produced on shoestring budgets, for up-and-coming directors. "With first- or second-time directors, there's a beautiful purity and a passion that is exhilarating to me," she says. "It's quite moving."
But what of her future as the wild and eccentric Aunt Sarah? "It is the most amazing show, from the top on down," Clarkson says. "But I don't know what they're going to do with Aunt Sarah. Who knows where Aunt Sarah is? She could be on another planet and somehow it would make sense."
