An artist of limitless gifts, John Leguizamo acts, writes, produces and with UNDEFEATED, directs. A tireless worker, Leguizamo has, over the last five years, acted in over twenty feature films and television movies, produced seven award-winning films, written two one-man stage shows, (one of which toured nationally over 2001), set up ten projects through his NY-based production company Lower East Side Films, and is writing his first book, a collection of short stories.
Leguizamo recently finished a national tour of SEXAHOLIX... a love story. SEXAHOLIX premiered at the Royale Theater on Broadway in December 2001, which was nominated for Best Special Theatrical Event at this year's Tony Awards. In 1999, Leguizamo was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Play for his Broadway debut, FREAK. The HBO version of FREAK, directed by Spike Lee, won the 2000 Emmy® Award for Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Music Program. His broad-ranged film interests are mirrored in his choice of acting projects - in the last year he has starred in the independent movies ZIG ZAG, SPUN and EMPIRE, as well as the studio-backed movies, MOULIN ROUGE (Fox), COLLATERAL DAMAGE (Warner Brothers) and POINT OF ORIGIN for HBO.
Leguizamo was a co-executive producer on Miramax's recent release, PINERO, a project Leguizamo's company found in 1996. He also co-produced EMPIRE (dir: Frank Reyes), KING OF THE JUNGLE (dir: Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), NUYORICAN DREAM (a documentary directed by Laurie Collyer and Sundance 2000 entry), and JOE THE KING (Frank Whaley's directing debut which won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999.) Besides UNDEFEATED, Leguizamo's production company is currently working with such talents as Alexander Payne, Steven Chbosky, and Mike Nichols.
