Hart Sharp Entertainment (Executive Producer)

Hart Sharp Entertainment was founded in 1996 by John Hart and Jeff Sharp to finance, develop and produce film and theatrical productions. The company finances its independent film projects through the True Film Fund, a private equity fund established by Hart Sharp in 2000. Hart Sharp has also struck a two-year deal with Film Four UK to produce films with budgets of $6 million and above.

Hart Sharp produced You Can Count On Me (Paramount Classics, 2000), starring Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo, and Matthew Broderick, and written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. You Can Count On Me premiered in competition at Sundance 2000, where it won the festival Grand Jury Prize for Best Film and the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. You Can Count On Me was nominated for two Academy Awards®: for Best Actress (Laura Linney) and Best Original Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan). In 1999, Hart Sharp produced the critically acclaimed film Boys Don't Cry, based on the life of Teena Brandon. Starring Hilary Swank and Chloe Sevigny, the film was written and directed by Kimberly Peirce and distributed by Fox Searchlight Films. Hilary Swank won both the Golden Globe® and the Academy Award® for Best Actress for her work in Boys Don't Cry.

Hart Sharp premiered the urban drama Lift at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival in Dramatic Competition. The film stars Kerry Washington (Save The Last Dance) and Lonette McKee. Lift was written and directed by DeMane Davis and Khari Streeter, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2001 Urbanworld Film Festival, and screened at the New Directors/New Films series at the Museum of Modern Art in March 2001. The film was nominated for two 2002 Independent Spirit Awards and premiered in June 2002 on Showtime.

Currently in post-production with United Artists is Nicholas Nickleby,, adapted and directed by Douglas McGrath (Emma) and featuring Jim Broadbent, Anne Hathaway, Christopher Plummer, Nathan Lane, Tom Courtenay, Jamie Bell, and Charlie Hunnam.

In development is the film adaptation of Proof, based on David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize winning play, which Hart Sharp is producing with Miramax. Hart Sharp is currently developing Susan Minot's bestselling novel Evening, as well as P.S. by Helen Schulman. Both novelists are screenwriters and are adapting their books for screen. Hart Sharp is developing a film about Leigh Bowery with Film Four, based on a book by Sue Tilley titled "Icon: The Life and Times of Leigh Bowery." Also in development is The Women's Maintenance Club, based on the true story of four women in Queens, New York. In addition, Hart Sharp is developing The Trials of Maria Barbella at Miramax, based on a book by Idanna Pucci about the true story of the first woman sentenced to the electric chair.

Theatrical projects co-produced by Hart Sharp include the current Tony Award winning Broadway revivals of "Chicago" and "Annie Get Your Gun." Hart Sharp associate produced the recent Off-Broadway play "The Laramie Project." Upcoming are Hart Sharp theatrical productions of Jean Anouilh's "Becket" and Alan Menken's "Kicks."
