"Without the BT shunt... my daughter would not have made it to her first birthday."
Submitted by: Vicky M., Boonton, NJ
At 2 days old, my daughter was diagnosed with a fatal congenital heart defect, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. She was missing the main pumping chamber in her heart, which was undetected by numerous prenatal ultrasounds. At 6 days old she had her first open heart surgery, which included the placement of the BT shunt. This life-saving procedure provided us the time needed for her heart to grow and enabled her to have her second staged surgery. Now she is 3 years old and on June 23rd she will complete the last stage of the palliative surgery. Without the BT shunt, and the pioneers of congenital heart surgery, my daughter would not have made it to her first birthday. Thank you HBO for making this movie and for promoting awareness of congenital heart defects. Vicky M., proud mom to Kelly.
