"Vivien Thomas was my Great Uncle."

Submitted by: Roger S., Matawan, NJ

I just wanted to thank HBO for bringing this very important story to the public. It's a story that I have known all my life, and to see it on screen has brought nothing but sheer pride and joy to myself and the rest of my family. Vivien Thomas was my Great Uncle. My Grandfather was Harold Thomas, Vivien's brother, who brought his case before the supreme court as a black teacher who did not receive the same wages as white teachers. That is another movie in itself. But my uncle, whom we called "Uncle V" was a very special person. I grew up in New York City, and my uncle lived in Baltimore. I spent most of my summers with my uncle and his wife, Aunt Vivien, during my adolescent years. In all that time, I cannot recall my uncle ever talking about what he did for a living. At that point in my life I guess it was not very important to me anyway. What was important was the interest, concern, patience and care that my uncle showed me that I will never forget. Watching this production just made me realize how much I miss him. I am a stockbroker in New York, and I have a 14 year-old son. My family has a rich history, and once again thank you for showing a piece of it.
