"She always used to have wonderful stories of how surgery was performed in the late 30's and early 40's. Many times she said they would leave dances being held in downtown Nashville and go to surgery with their evening gowns still on."

My mother, Thelma Easley Strahan, was Dr. Blalock's chief surgical nurse when he was at Vanderbilt University. My Mother graduated from the university in 1936. She was chosen by Dr. Blalock upon her graduation. When Dr. Blalock left Vandy to go to Johns Hopkins, he wrote my mother a wonderful recommendation for her to use in her career. I never really thought much about the "letter" until watching the movie. She is now in a nursing home. When I see her this afternoon I will inform her of the movie and tell me a little more about Dr. Blalock. She always used to have wonderful stories of how surgery was performed in the late 30's and early 40's. Many times she said they would leave dances being held in downtown Nashville and go to surgery with their evening gowns still on. I never realized how famous Dr. Blalock was until now. I am sure she knew Dr. Thomas as well since they both started with Blalock about the same time.
