"I turned blue when I ran."

Submitted by: Carolyn K., Montesano, WA

I was born on Jan 31, 1953. I was born with CHD, a congenital heart defect. My pediatrician didn't know this at the time. Back in the summer of 1959, when doctors made house calls, an on-call pediatrician came to my house. My sister and I had a severe case of chicken pox. This doctor found something unusual with my heart. He found a murmur. Our regular pediatrician rolled his eyes at my mother whenever she complained that I turned blue when I ran. Finally, there was a doctor who listened to her about all the symptoms I was presenting. After numerous tests at St. Francis Hospital and Sanatorium in Port Washington, NY, I was scheduled for surgery in the fall of that year. As I always did, I got sick from a cold and had to have the surgery postponed. My mother had to keep me isolated till I was better. On Jan 6 1960, I was operated on for holes in my heart. I had ASD and VSD corrective surgery at St. Francis. I am now 51 years old!
