"We work in a field that no one cares about until they are on the table."

Submitted by: Angela Gomez, Huntington Beach, CA

This movie was truly humbling for me. I have been working in cardiac surgery for 13 years and all of our technology makes our job seem so easy in comparison to what Dr. Thomas had to work with. To fashion your own instruments and ventilator - WOW! I was truly touched. It made me proud to know I walk behind someone so humble and great. He spoke for me also, when he said "It's about the work". We work in a field that no one cares about until they are on the table. We get no public recognition for literally snatching people from death. It gets really deep in that cardiac OR. We, as Cardiac Surgical Techs, set the tone for the room. We carry everyone including the surgeons. We have to not only be on top of our game but everyone else's game also. I am now the Lead Cardiac Surgical Tech in the busiest heart program in Orange County. Like Dr. Thomas, we are the invisible heroes. There are no words to describe the gratitude for his life's work. Thank you HBO for bringing his wonderful work to TV for everyone to see.
