"It took my mother till I was 4 weeks old to convince the doctors that something was wrong."

Submitted by: A Berg

I am a 30 year old "blue baby". It took my mother till I was 4 weeks old to convince the doctors that something was wrong. She convinced them by screaming at the top of her lungs, as I turned blue on the exam table as the nurse was getting ER check out papers. They found out I had Tetrology of Fallot. My heart needed reconstructive surgery but with the technological timeline I was too small for it. With a 5% chance of survival and my families prayers I underwent the surgery for my first shunt at 6 weeks of age. At 10 months I needed another shunt to keep me alive till the day of reconstructive surgery so again with a 20% chance of survival and my families prayers, I received my second shunt. Well obviously I made it to 5 and had the reconstruction done. I have continued to have valve problems and needed 4 more surgeries after the first 3 and an arythmia problem but its ok. I thank God every day for the surgeons and for Drs. Blalock and Taussig. If they didn't use their imaginations and didn't push for what they thought was right, I and thousands more would not be alive.
