 Effie T. Brown (Producer)
Effie T. Brown, co-producer with George LaVoo, of REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES, calls the film "a blessed experience." Brown was in charge of the physical production, working closely with all the department heads. "It was an ambitious project which everyone joined because we thought it was important - a movie that could educate even as it entertained. We aimed to make the prettiest baby possible with our modest budget."
Brown relied on solid experience producing independent films to achieve her goals. After working as director of development for Tim Burton, she sequed into producing with Anne Heche's directorial debut, "Stripping for Jesus." She continued with a number of exceptionally diverse films---Cheryl Dunye's "Stranger Inside," the subversive cult satire "But I'm a Cheerleader," and "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her," starring Glenn Close and Holly Hunter.
Effie has also made herself available to assist those who are 'up and coming' by mentoring for IFP's Project Involve where she produced two shorts, the award-winning "Kickin' Chicken" and "A Table is a Table" (which won the ASC cinematography award). She line-produced "Desert Blue" starring Christina Ricci and Kate Hudson, and "Speedway Junkie."
An Army 'brat,' Brown was born in New Jersey but grew up in the West. She majored in film production at Loyola Marymount College and was paired with IFP mentor Laurie Parker upon graduation. Seeing Effie's potential, Laurie offered her a position at her company, Clementine Films, where she quickly became director of development.
She and Parker are together once again as the producers of Jane Campion's new film, "In the Cut," which stars Meg Ryan, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kevin Bacon and Mark Ruffalo.
