HBO:
Your character, to put in mildly, gets screwed
over at the start of this film. And out of
desperation to try and take care of his family
decides to do something rather diabolical.
Paddy Considine:
Yes, it's very diabolical, and that's what was
interesting about the character. I thought this
guy's doing a really terrible, terrible thing.
He's taken plutonium with the aim of selling it
on the black market, which will potentially put
it in the hands of terrorists. And in the
climate that we're living in at the moment,
that's an appalling thing to do. But I think
he's sympathetic through his actions because
he is totally, as you say screwed over, and
what he performs is a very selfless, noble act.
The result is that he's just thrown out the
backside of the system, and basically left to
rot. But you do sympathize with him.
I'm a father and I think, well what would I do
to secure my wife and kids future? And it's
quite a mad act. But in actual fact I think
there's a point in the film where he does
realize that what he's doing is absolutely
insane.
HBO:
You almost look like you're regretting every
moment of what you're doing and yet, there's
a necessity and urgency behind it.
Paddy Considine:
He does regret everything even as he's doing
it. But there's also this drive. He's been so
badly done over, and I think, the biggest thing
that fuels him is he knows what his family is
facing, which is absolute destitution and
poverty.
HBO:
How do you think audiences will react to your
character and this story?
Paddy Considine:
I always played Timofey as a man who was
using every resource in his body just to do the
right thing by his wife and child. This story
resonates with me. I get where he's coming
from 'cause I'd do exactly the same thing. So
I never thought how the audience is gonna
react. I thought they'd get it.
I mean what would you do? Would you let
yourself and your family be fucked over or
would you fight back knowing that your
family was facing absolute poverty and
destitution?
