Johnson became the symbol of an unpopular war that he never wanted to wage. Path to War is the inside story of how the "best and the brightest" advisors in the Johnson administration convinced the president to pour money and men into Vietnam in 1965, and how these same advisors couldn't figure out a way to end the war once it became clear that the strategies they devised had failed. By the election year of 1968, Johnson and his men were immersed in the biggest foreign-policy mess in the country's history, one that eclipsed Johnson's domestic triumphs and led to his decision not to seek a second term in office.
