JOSH MAURER (Executive Producer)
Joshua D. Maurer is President of City Entertainment, his television and feature film development and production company that currently has over 40 hours of network and cable television in development.
Maurer is currently developing a wide range of projects, which includes Producing the motion picture THE HOAX along with The Mark Gordon Company, detailing the true story of Clifford Irving and Howard Hughes which became known as Americas greatest literary scandal.
In addition to AND STARRING PANCHO VILLA AS HIMSELF, Maurer and his company are presently developing a wide range of historical dramas including THE JASON LEOPOLD STORY for Showtime, the true story of the maverick reporter who broke the Enron scandal; BROADWAY JOE for FX Networks, chronicling the true story of Joe Namath and the creation of the world's first superstar athlete; EXODUS 1947, a miniseries for ABC, tells the true story of a group of American boys who risked their own lives to help 4,500 Holocaust survivors break the British blockade and in the process helped forge the new nation of Israel; A BAND OF ANGELS for Paramount, the true story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers; COMPOSITION IN BLACK AND WHITE, the true story of Philippa Schuyler, in partnership with Academy Award winner Halle Berry and Vincent Cirrincione, THE MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT STORY, in partnership with actress Connie Nielsen; I'M WITH THE BAND, the true story of Pamela Des Barres, rock-and-roll's first groupie; BITTER FRUIT for Paramount, the true story of the CIA's clandestine overthrow of the democratically elected government of Guatemala; LUCREZIA BORGIA in partnership with Green Moon Productions Antonio Banderas and Diane Sillon Isaacs; a sequel to PAPILLON in partnership with Lion Rock Productions John Woo, Terence Chang and Suzanne Zizzi; GUERNICA, a true story of the Abraham Lincoln Brigades involvement in the Spanish Civil War, in partnership with Green Moon Productions Antonio Banderas and Diane Sillon Isaacs; and an untitled film for A&E Networks.
Prior to forming his own company, Maurer began his professional career as an actor, training with Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis and then receiving his B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College both in history and drama. After graduation, Maurer first appeared in the critically acclaimed Vietnam War CBS TV series TOUR OF DUTY, portraying the lead character of conscientious objector "Private Roger Horn". He later went on to star in a number of television movies including TAKEN AWAY alongside Valerie Bertinelli, as well as the motion picture GETTYSBURG, directed by Ronald Maxwell, portraying "Colonel James C. Rice".
The first movie that Maurer Executive Produced under the City Entertainment banner was DEAD MEN CAN'T DANCE for Live Entertainment, starring Michael Biehn and Adrian Paul. Inspired by real-life events, the film chronicles the trials and tribulations of America's first female combat platoon in Korea's DMZ and was released in 1997.
In 1999, Maurer Executive Produced HBO's critically acclaimed INTRODUCING DOROTHY DANDRIDGE. Written by Shonda Rhimes and Scott Abbott ("Winchell") and directed by Martha Coolidge ("Rambling Rose"), the film starred Academy Award® winner Halle Berry and Academy Award® nominee Klaus Maria Brandauer. Under Maurer's guidance, the film went on to earn 11 Emmy® nominations including Outstanding Made for Television Movie, Directing, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Editing, Sound Editing, and Choreography and received 5 Emmy® wins for Outstanding Lead Actress for Halle Berry, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes and Hairstyling. The film was also honored with 3 NAACP Image Awards for Best Television Movie, Best Actress for Halle Berry and Best Screenplay. The film went on to garner an additional 3 Golden Globe nominations, a DGA nomination and Satellite Award nomination, and a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Halle Berry. The film was also honored with the PRISM Award 2000, American Society of Cinematographers Award, ACE Eddie Award for best editing, Golden Reel Winner for Best Sound Editing, and the NAMIC Annual VISION Award for Best Drama.
In 2001, Maurer Executive Produced DODSON'S JOURNEY for CBS. Written by John Pielmeier ("Agnes of God"), the film starred David James Elliott, Ellen Burstyn, Robert Loggia, Penelope Ann Miller and Alicia Morton. The made-for-television movie recorded one of the highest viewerships (11.8 million) of any original program of that year.
In 2002/2003, Maurer Executive Produced the critically acclaimed film THE PENTAGON PAPERS for Paramount Pictures and FX Networks. The film starred James Spader, Paul Giamatti, Claire Forlani and Academy Award® nominee Alan Arkin, who received an Emmy® nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Ellsberg's boss Harry Rowen. Rod Holcomb directed from a script by Jason Horwitch. THE PENTAGON PAPERS is the true story of Daniel Ellsberg, a high-ranking Pentagon official whose greatest act of Patriotism was an act of Treason. At the height of the Vietnam War, Ellsberg turned over a 7,000 page top secret and classified Department of Defense document, which proved that the war in Vietnam could not be won, to reporters at the New York Times and Washington Post. Historians widely regard this act as being a seminal moment in the anti-war effort to bring American soldiers home from Southeast Asia.
In addition to acting and producing, Maurer is also a screenwriter, having sold projects to FX, FOX, SHOWTIME, ABC and PARAMOUNT. He is a member of S.A.G. and the W.G.A.
Maurer lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Producer Alixandre Witlin, cofounder of City Entertainment.
