Teach Tolerance

Bias is a human condition, and American history is rife with prejudice against groups and individuals because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or other differences. The good news is ... All over the country people are fighting hate. Standing up to hate mongers. Promoting tolerance and inclusion. More often than not, when hate flares up, good erupts, too.

A donation was made of behalf of the cast and crew of The Laramie Project to The Southern Poverty Law Center, GLAD and The Matthew Shepard Foundation.

The links and downloadable materials below were compiled with the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center's tolerance.org project, to help foster social tolerance.

10 Ways to Fight Hate
This guide sets out 10 principles for fighting hate along with a collection of inspiring stories of people who acted, often alone at first, to push hate out of their communities. Our experience shows that one person, acting from conscience and love, can neutralize bigotry. A group of people can create a moral barrier to hate.

101 Tools for Tolerance
Hate can only be conquered by citizen-activists willing to promote tolerance. You may already be one of them. The ideas in this guide will help foster tolerance in yourself, your family, your schools, your workplace and your community. Some of the ideas are things to do. Some are things to think about. Some are things to remember.

Responding to Hate at School
Designed to help administrators, teachers and counselors react promptly and effectively to all bias incidents, and to involve students, as well as parents and community leaders, in finding solutions to underlying tensions. It offers proven strategies and concrete steps for addressing day-to-day problems such as casual use of putdowns, emergency situations like hate crimes, and long-term issues including school policies and staff development designed to promote harmony.

Test Yourself for Hidden Bias Against Gays and Lesbians
Created by psychologists at Yale University and the University of Washington, this collection of Implicit Association Tests (IAT) measures unconscious bias. We invite you to test yourself and reveal what may be lingering in your psyche. Your test results may disturb you -- more than one million tests have been taken and the majority reveal unconscious bias. Each test takes about five minutes.
