Screenplay

Hugh Whitemore began his career in British television writing many original plays and dramatizations. He received Writers' Guild Awards for his dramatizations of CIDER WITH ROSIE and for his contribution to Granada's celebrated COUNTRY MATTERS series. With director Franc Roddam, he created the controversial drama/documentary, DUMMY, which won the RAI Prize in the 1979 Prix Italia. His most recent TV work was the Channel 44 adaptation of Anthony Powell's novel, A DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF TIME, which won the script prize at the 1998 Monte Carlo Festival. He has also written for American television, notably - four hour film about the Alger Hiss case - which won an Emmy for the best mini-series. His dramatization of the Bob Woodward/Carl Bernstein book, THE FINAL DAYS, received an Emmy nomination for outstanding writing.

Movie credits include THE RETURN OF THE SOLDIER (starring Julie Christie, Glenda Jackson, Ann Margaret and Alan Bates), UTZ, (an adaptation of Bruce Chatwin's novel, which won three prizes at the 1992 Berlin Film Festival) and Franco Zeffirelli's JANE EYRE (starring William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg).

His stage plays include STEVIE ( starring Glenda Jackson), PACK OF LIES (starring Judi Dench), BREAKING THE CODE (starring Derek Jacobi), THE BEST OF FRIENDS (starring John Gielgud, Rosemary Harris and Ray MacAnally), IT'S RALPH (starring Timothy West), A LETTER OF RESIGNATION (starring Edward Fox), DISPOSING OF THE BODY, and GOD ONLY KNOWS (starring Derek Jacobi). These plays have been translated into many languages and have been produced throughout the world. There have also been numerous film and television adaptations, including a TV version of BREAKING THE CODE, which was named Best Single TV Drama of 1997 by the Broadcasting Press Guild, and won prizes at the Banff Festival, the San Francisco Festival, and the Festival de Television de Monte Carlo.

Hugh Whitemore's most recent projects are HIS HOLINESS (a biographical film about Pope John Paul II), which is being developed by Hallmark and HBO, and RFK, a television film for TNT. His latest play, GOD ONLY KNOWS, has recently finished its run at The Vaudeville Theatre.
