Synopsis

"Day 2" With Ethan safe at home, the police mount a search for the driver of the flower truck the boy saw on the day of Leanne's abduction, posting Shaky - one of their detectives - to stake out a floral wholesaler. Foster interviews Ethan at the station, and he tells her the man who picked them up drove a dirty white van with writing on it. Ethan managed to get away when his dog bit the man, but Rosie is still missing. Across town, Kyle runs a white van through a car wash.

Josh visits Vic at the nursing home, asking for background on Leanne and looking for family photos. Vic tells Josh that all the photos are kept in his old mobile home, and after Josh plies him with a cigarette, Vic agrees to hand over the keys. "Leanne used to cry blue murder over smoking," he tells the young journalist. "She made me give it up once. Don't exactly have to worry about dying at a young age now, do I?"

Matt, hounded at home by journalists, refuses Tops' requests for him to make an appeal in front of the cameras. "You want me to sit for the cameras and cry because that's what the husband does," he says. "And all the time everyone's saying, 'It's him. Nine times out of 10, it's the husband that did it.'" Unable to argue, Tops leaves, passing Sarah - who shows up with flowers - on her way out. Tops tells her to leave, but Sarah ignores her. When she finds Ethan with Matt in the backyard, the boy comes running to her. "I wish I could have found more for you," she tells Matt. He complains again about Tops' wanting him to appear at a press conference, but Sarah tells him, "It's better than sitting here."

Another journalist, Mic Danes, starts to sniff around the story, visiting Danielle at Matt's gym for some quotes. Tops catches him outside Barbara and John's house, and when she tries to shoo him away, he mentions a tip he received that Leanne was having an affair. Tops brings the information back to Barclay and pushes him to appear at the afternoon press conference. With few leads in the case, she tells him, "At this point the media is bigger than the investigation." He agrees to attend but never shows, ignoring her frantic calls.

Matt, after Sarah's suggestion, attends the conference, where Mic cozies up to Josh in the press pool. As Tops removes Barclay's name card and explains that Matt will read a statement without taking questions, Josh blurts out: "Mr. Wellings, can you confirm that your wife was pregnant when she disappeared?" Without saying a word, Matt storms out of the room. While the reporters voice their irritation that no new information is available, Barbara reads a statement, "Every day that goes by with no word is a day closer to us sitting here talking about the murder of my only child," and ends with a hollow wail.

Simone drives Matt home with Sarah following them, and she asks why he never told the police that Leanne was pregnant. "If she was," he says, "she never told me." As they pass the scene of his wife's abduction, he asks Simone to pull over, but when he finds people leaving flowers outside the police barricade, he chases them off, shouting. Sarah jumps out of her car and tries to calm him, but he turns on her, too. "You're getting off on this, aren't you? On our pain!" Sarah, crying, drives off.

At police headquarters, Barclay's supervisor comes by to check on his progress. The case is very important to the department, she says, because a round of restructuring could close down constabularies that don't prove their worth with public successes. Barclay tells her he just wants to be left alone to investigate his own way, and she replies, "Then you've got the wrong job."

When the owner of the dog shelter comes to Matt's house to check on their new pet, Matt loses his temper again, attacking the man in front of the cameras. Simone takes him inside, explaining that he's not a suspect, but also insisting that he answer some questions he won't like, starting with whether he thought Leanne was having an affair with Tanya's father. Matt says there's no way - that Tanya's father is the kind of man who hasn't called his daughter since Leanne's disappearance.

Hazel comes home from work, and walks into Kyle's room, looking for her son. When she notices reports of Leanne's disappearance on his computer screen, she becomes suspicious. Later, she takes a closer look at his van and decides to call the police, begging them to keep her identity a secret. When Barclay gets the tip, he suggests that the writing on the van could have been drawn into the dirt that was washed off. The police look up Kyle in their system and decide to bring him in.

Josh goes to Vic's trailer to search for family photos and is shocked to find Rosie sleeping alone in a back room. "Don't move," he tells her as he pulls out his camera to snap a photo. He then grabs the girl and runs outside, yelling for help and asking a neighbor to take another shot of him holding Rosie. Jumping on his bike, he hurries back to the office. But, as it turns out, he misses the best part of his own story when Kyle shows up in his van moments before the police arrive and arrest him.

Matt hurries to the hospital to see his daughter, and Simone has to hold him back to prevent him from touching the girl before the forensic team finishes examining her. He keeps a vigil by her side, and later that night, Barclay comes to check on them. The detective can't assure Matt that Rosie wasn't sexually assaulted, though there's no evidence to suggest it. "I need it much more definite than that," Matt tells the lead detective, who offers his mobile number to Matt. "What's the point," Matt asks him. "You don't know any more than I do."

When police ask Vic how Kyle got a key to his mobile home, the old man explains that he let Kyle use the space - as a favor to Hazel - to store smuggled cigarettes. Early the next morning, Shakey is shocked to see the flower-truck driver turn up at the wholesaler. Tackling the man and arresting him, the detective nabs the case's first solid lead.
