Synopsis
"Day 1"
Leanne Wellings gathers up her children - Ethan, 7; Rosie, 4; and Tanya, 14 - to visit
their great grandfather, Vic, at his nursing home. When Tanya resists her mother, using
homework as an excuse to stay home, Leanne doesn't have time to argue and leaves
without a word. Rushing to a dog shelter to adopt a new family pet before seeing Vic,
Leanne passes a man selling flowers out of his van. On her way back from picking up the
dog, she decides to stop for flowers, and a brief phone argument with her husband, Matt,
ends abruptly as she gets out of the car.
When Leanne crosses the road, a truck pulls up
alongside their car, blocking the children's view, and when it pulls away, Leanne has
disappeared. In seconds, the flower salesman packs up his van and drives off. Ethan
jumps out of the car, searching for his mother, but he and Rosie are alone.
Unaware of what's happened, Matt meets his old army buddy, Gary, at the recruiting
center where he works. Matt asks if Gary can help him get some personal-training work
with the military, but his friend explains that he's planning to leave the service and was
hoping Matt could help him find a job. Laughing at the irony, the two head back to
Matt's gym so Gary can sit in on an aerobics class he teaches. At the fitness center, a
chubby loner named Kyle tries to talk to Matt about a squeaky treadmill, but the trainer
doesn't have time. On their way out after class, a pretty young gym employee named
Danielle tells Matt that he needs a beach vacation. "Or I could just show you pictures of
me in my bikini," she says. Matt responds with a pointed joke: "Sexual harassment." He
also warns Gary, "Watch out for this one. She doesn't take 'no' for an answer."
At Vic's nursing home, a young journalist named Josh Fairley interviews an elderly
couple about their golden anniversary. He passes Vic on his way back to the office and
brushes off the old man's worries about his granddaughter. But, as the hours drag on, Vic
can't stand the worrying and calls the police, who dispatch Officer Simone Farnes to
Leanne's house to look into things. She gets to the house just as Tanya returns from the
shopping trip that supplanted her homework, but the 14-year-old tells Simone that her
"Greats" is always making a fuss over something.
Ethan and Rosie wander aimlessly through the countryside, walking farther and farther
from their mother's abandoned car. As Rosie tires, Ethan loses his patience and leaves
her behind for a few minutes, but when a jogger approaches the little girl, he runs back
and pushes the man away. Eventually, Kyle pulls up in a white van and tells the children,
"I know your daddy - and your mummy. Why don't I take you to your mummy?" Both
children, and their new dog, climb into the van. The night drags on for Tanya, whose
repeated calls to Leanne's cell phone ring through to an empty car. When Matt - whose
relationship with his stepdaughter leaves a bit to be desired - comes home, he's
immediately worried and asks Tanya why she didn't contact him sooner. A quick call to
the nursing home determines that Leanne never arrived, so Matt calls Simone to file a
report. By the time she arrives, another officer has found Leanne's car on the highway.
At the scene, lead investigator Ian Barclay talks with another detective, Stephen "Jim"
Beam, about various scenarios. Defne "Tops" Topcu, the police department's public
information officer, rushes over from her house - still wearing gym clothes from her
marathon training - and asks Barclay how she should handle the press: "Do you need me
to buy you some time or press the button right away?" Barclay, ignoring her question,
turns to another detective, Amy Foster, and continues to explore theories.
Foster sends Tops to the family's home, where she helps Matt choose a photo of Leanne
and the kids to release to the media. While Matt manages to stay as calm as possible,
Tanya can't sit still and butts heads with anyone who steps into her path. When Simone
asks Matt if there's anyone she can call to help his stepdaughter, he decides to alert
Leanne's parents, John and Barbara. Later that night, Matt makes progress with Tanya for
a moment when he tells her, "I think your mum will be really pleased if you and me just
look after each other a bit." Tanya nods, but when Barbara comes around the corner,
doting on the girl and offering jam, Tanya storms off. In the middle of the night, once
everyone has either gone home or fallen asleep, Matt rides off on his motorcycle,
stopping under a highway overpass to destroy his cell phone.
Kyle, pulled over to the side of the road in another desolate area, tries frantically to call
some unknown person but can't get through. When he arrives home later that night, his
mother, Hazel - who also works at Vic's nursing home - finds him washing his clothes
and notices an open wound on his hand. She steps forward to get a look, but he recoils,
telling her, "Don't fuss - I'll bring you a cop of tea."
The next day at police headquarters, Barclay and Foster go over closed-circuit TV
footage of the area surrounding the crime scene. While they find video of Ethan and
Rosie walking away from the car, any clues to Leanne's disappearance fell into a blind
spot. Again, Tops approaches Barclay about using the press to drum up leads, but he
brushes her off, grumbling, "The more attractive the woman, the more fuss all these
journalists want to make."
Josh, back at the nursing home to finish up his anniversary piece, hears about Leanne's
disappearance from Hazel, who is friends with Vic. Hurrying back to his editor with a
photo of Leanne in hand, he gets the go-ahead to follow the story, but when he tries to
confirm the details of the case with Tops, she shuts him out: "When there is anything to
tell you, you'll be told." Meanwhile, Jim canvasses an apartment complex near the crime
scene with a group of uniformed officers. When he wakes a young woman named Sarah
Wheeler from a nap on her couch to ask questions, she realizes she's late for an
appointment and rushes out to her car. When she opens the door to her garage stall, a dog
comes poking out, and a moment later, she sees Ethan huddled behind some boxes, but
Rosie is nowhere to be found. "Officers," she yells, "Help - I've found him!"
