Elephant
Winner of the Palme d'Or and Best Director prizes at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, Gus Van Sant's Elephant is an unforgettable inside look at an American high school on one single, ordinary day that very rapidly turns tragic. The story unfolds in a series of ingeniously time-shifted segments that provide overlapping points of view of several high-school students, seen carrying out a variety of familiar activities - classwork, hobbies, gossip, socializing - in the hours leading up to a catastrophic act of violence. Featuring a cast consisting primarily of actual high-school students, the film (shot in a real school in Portland, OR) captures both the unique, somewhat isolated world of student life in America, as well as the inexplicable, arbitrary events that can destroy people's lives forever.
Executive Produced by Diane Keaton and Bill Robinson. Written, directed and edited by Gus Van Sant.
