David Oyelowo graduated from the London Academy of Music and
Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in 1998. He first impressed audiences in "The Suppliants" at the
Gate Theatre playing King Palasgus, for which he received the Ian Charleson award
commendation. Following this, he played the title role of "Henry VI," becoming the first
black actor to play an English king for the RSC. The role won him the Ian Charleson Award
and an Evening Standard award nomination. His other theatre credits include an
acclaimed performance in Richard Bean's "The God Botherers" at the Bush Theatre and
the title role in Aeschylus' "Prometheus Bound," for which Oyelowo received rave reviews
during the play's recent off-Broadway run.
On TV, Oyelowo starred in the BAFTA Award-winning series "Spooks/MI:5," as well
as in the TV film "Born Equal," opposite Colin Firth. He recently finished working on a US
TV production of "A Raisin in the Sun," with Sanaa Lathan and Sean Combs, which will air
in spring 2008. He also stars in the upcoming HBO Films miniseries "Five Days."
He was last seen on the big screen in Kevin MacDonald's "The Last King of
Scotland," opposite Forrest Whittaker and James MacAvoy. His other films include "A
Sound of Thunder," "Derailed" and "The Best Man," as well as the acclaimed "Shoot the
Messenger," for which he was nominated for Best Actor at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival.
Oyelowo is scheduled to begin production on his next project in August on location in
Botswana, an adaptation of the best-selling Alexander McCall Smith novel "The No.1
Ladies' Detective Agency," to be directed by Anthony Minghella.
