Angel Rodriguez explores the complicated relationship between Nicole, a white, well-educated counselor, and Angel, a bright but troubled teenager she is trying to help.

Angel's problems might not seem to be overwhelming; he's not mentally unstable, abusing drugs, or in trouble with the law. He's a kid who acts out by stealing, lying, fighting with his father, and undermining most of the opportunities he's given.

In a different context, his behavior might be understood as an adolescent phase of confusion and rebellion. But Angel's situation is less forgiving - his conduct has led to his father, who now lives with a girlfriend Angel despises, throwing his son out of the house.

Nicole is also at a turning point in her life. Pregnant for the first time, it soon becomes clear that she's in a period of re-examination, both with her career and with her relationship to her husband, who may or may not be losing interest in their marriage. Working at a social center called The Bridge,

Nicole's vocation has been to act as a parental figure to children who lack one; now, she will have a child of her own to nurture. As Angel seems headed for the streets, Nicole takes him into her own home until he can resolve his conflicts with his father. But soon the limitations of her compassion are laid bare; Angel makes the rift with his father permanent, and continues sabotaging his life, losing chances as he struggles to find himself.

The conclusion of Angel Rodriguez is deliberately open-ended, with Angel facing a future in which success or failure are equally viable options.
