Director of Photography
Cinematographer, Peter Rieveschl is currently overseeing photography on the new HBO documentary series "Family Bonds", produced by Stick Figure Productions. Prior to his work on this 10 part series, he served as one of the DP's on John Landis' "Slasher" , for IFC, a portrait of a used car salesman. And continued with some work on "The Cult of Cindy", for AMC, another Stick Figure production that looks at the bizarre world of plastic surgery through the eyes of its biggest client and her wannabe clones.
His career began in Los Angeles in 1993. Upon graduating from the USC School of Cinema/Television, he shot many music videos for artists like Rod Stewart, Macy Gray and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, in addition to many commercial spots for clients like Nike, Penn Tennis Balls, Shiseido and Virgin Records. Traveling around the world, he has worked in Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, in Europe and throughout North America. His photography on the commercial for the Boystown National Hotline helped it win an Emmy award in 1998 for Best PSA.
Not limited by genre or format, Peter has also photographed several feature films. In 1998, the film "Burn", about a frustrated writer, took the Special Honor Jury Prize at the then nascent Slamdance Film Festival. Also that year, the short film, "Luz de la Mission" won Best American Film at the Los Angeles Shorts Festival. In the summer of 1999, Peter shot over 250,000 feet of Super35 for the film "Chasing the Dragon", about heroin addicts in Little Rock, Arkansas. Continuing his visual exploration, "Klepto" was photographed in 2002 on High Definition, one of many projects he has done using this emerging technology. "Klepto" follows the escapades of a shoplifter in her downward spiral with what Variety critic Dennis Harvey described "a well-though-out visual aesthetic".
The documentary genre has also been a thread running through his diverse career. In 1997 "Naked States: the Movie" followed photographer Spencer Tunick on his cross-country quest for nudes. Serving as both cinematographer and co-director, he spent a month in the summer of 2000 on a tour bus with the Moonshine Music record label to document their annual Rave tour. "American Massive" chased 9 DJ's through 24 cities and was named one of the three top music documentaries for that year by Rolling Stone magazine. Other documentary projects he has lensed include profiles on the likes of Clive McClean, famed Hustler photographer (AMC), Bill Hicks, The outlaw comic (Trio Network), and Axle Rose, ex-GNR (VH1).
