After Ricky Gervais graduated from London University with a degree in philosophy, he then went to work at the University as entertainment manager for the University Students Union. It was here that he first started developing material for The Office and the first incarnation of David Brent, a character then called Seedy Boss.

Ricky took a marketing job at London radio station XFM, where he was later offered his own show. Stephen Merchant worked as his assistant, until he went to the BBC to undertake a production-training course. As part of the course, Stephen collaborated with Ricky to produce a film set in Ricky's old office that they gave to the BBC.

Ricky became a regular contributor on national television for Channel 4's satirical program, The Eleven O'Clock Show, and was soon presenting his own chat show for the network, Meet Ricky Gervais. Then came his lead role in "The Office", a show which has received huge critical acclaim and a host of prestigious awards, including Two Golden Globes, six BAFTAs, four British Comedy Awards and the prestigious American award, The Peabody.

Ricky has been a regular contributor on a variety of programs on Radio 1, one of the BBC's national radio networks. He was also the musical advisor on the successful cult UK drama, This Life.

Following the success of The Office, Ricky embarked on his first live stand-up show, Animals, based on his fascination with the animal kingdom (including that curious species, the human being). The show covered subjects as diverse as bats classifying, gay animals, and the Great War poets. Ricky spent much of 2004 on tour around the UK with his follow-up stand-up act the, highly acclaimed Politics. Both shows became best-selling DVDs.

Recently, Ricky marked a return to his interest in the animal world with the release of his children's book, Flanimals, which shot to # 1 on the Amazon sales chart before it had even been published (Faber. October 2004). The best-selling book was also published in the U.S. this year and immediately shot to # 1 in the New York Times Bestseller List.

In March of 2005, Ricky played a featured part in his first film, — the animated Valiant. Ricky plays a pigeon called Bugsy, in a film about carrier pigeons during the World War II. The film was released in the U.S. in August of this year.

Ricky became the first British person to write an episode of The Simpsons. He recently filmed this in LA and which will be shown later in the year.
