Perrey Reeves talks about growing up without TV, living in the jungle (the real one), and her steamy sex scenes with Jeremy Piven. HBO You have an unusual background for someone who plays a character immersed in Hollywood. You grew up without TV in Europe and New Hampshire, and you spend most of your time in a Costa Rican jungle. It seems fair to say you're a long way from a Beverly Hills wife?
Oh, yeah, I am definitely not Mrs. Ari. [LAUGHS] HBO Let's start with childhood. You were raised in a few different places. REEVES We lived in France when I was young, and we lived a lot of different places till we moved to New Hampshire. My dad was a professor, so we lived in university towns. HBO And no TV? REEVES Not really, but the nice thing about growing up in that kind of environment is you were exposed to so much -music, plays, art exhibits, rock concerts. At the same time, there was a small town feel. And everyone in my family was born in New York, so my mom took us there when she could. HBO When you're not shooting Entourage in LA, you're living in Costa Rica most of the year? REEVES Yeah, talk about two radically different lives. I live in the jungle in a house heated by solar power, and you cannot drive to our property. You have to hike in and cross a river four times. We're building an eco'estate to host yoga, meditation, health and wellness retreats. It's a beautiful 40-acre property above the beach on a west coast peninsula, surrounded by fruit trees, waterfalls and so much green, it's breathtaking. I feel very lucky to be able to preserve a piece of nature. HBO And it's open for people to come down for retreats? REEVES Currently it is in the development phase and we hope to be open for retreats in May 2007. HBO Are you gonna get the boys from Entourage to come down there? Seems like they're going to need a retreat to nature pretty soon.
[LAUGHS] If I could lure them down. They're such city boys, but could you imagine? I have found that my friends who've grown up in the city have a really hard time being in the dark. They're used to lights no matter where they are. HBO So your family doesn't watch a lot of TV, but have they seen Entourage by now? REEVES They do watch Entourage, and they do really like it. It's a fun show for anyone, and they hear all my funny stories about Hollywood. My mom came out one year, and I think I was testing for something at FOX, so I brought her with me. I looked like I was 13, so they thought that she was my guardian or my manager, and people came up to her with paperwork to sign. My mom was having a heart attack. HBO Oh no. [LAUGHS] REEVES I was like, just sit over there, I'll take care of it. I have exposed them to a bit. My mom came in to meet me for the Entourage premiere, so that's kind of fun. I always like to bring family members to premieres, because they really enjoy it. HBO All the flash bulbs and famous faces, to be in the middle of it all must do a job on the pulse. REEVES It's not my favorite part, actually. I remember getting out of the limo for something once, and thinking, I'm gonna faint, I don't think I can get out. They're yelling, 'Come on, you can do it!' I'm one of those people that likes acting because I get to pretend to be other people. And when you're in front of the camera, you're actually not supposed to be aware of it. So, to be yourself and in front of all that attention is just nerve-wracking. You don't have anywhere to look, and they're all yelling and saying 'Turn your head here' and 'Do this.' HBO You have an enlarged role this season. And your marriage to Ari is pretty interesting. Everyone reads about Hollywood marriages lasting five months. And you would think he'd be on his fourth or fifth wife by now. What do you think keeps them together? REEVES It is really interesting - this is a couple that's been together probably since college. It's sort of twisted, but they really love each other. You learn from the first episode that she comes from money. She married the guy she was in love with, and they're still in love. He talks about all that other stuff, and I'm just like, whatever. It's like a dog that barks really loud and would never bite. He wouldn't dare act on it. They're both very ambitious. They both know what they're doing and she's very supportive of his career. HBO She's clearly got the hots for him, too. REEVES She does - they have a sexy relationship. All that fire really comes to something this season... which you will see down the line. It's hot.
Oh yeah? That's a good little teaser. REEVES Yeah, mmm-hmm. HBO So you sort of fight fire with fire, give it right back to him, and that seems to keep the sparks flying. But he does kind of force you to play the bitch. REEVES Yeah. People sometimes tell me, 'You play such a good bitch.' I am a little more intense as Mrs. Ari in the beginning of this season. I'm a little more... shrewy. But, hey, sometimes you gotta be. Sometimes yelling is the only way to go. Children left to their own devices are gonna be out of control. But this is how I look at it: she just has really clear boundaries within the family life. It's only because she loves Ari so much that she doesn't want him to go out and embarrass himself or do something that he would maybe regret later. He has sort of enlisted her to keep everything in control. So it's 'just tell me when I've gone too far.' And she does. It can look like, my God, how can he live with that? But it's a relief for him to go home and not have to make all the decisions, to have someone else doing it for him. HBO That's a good way to look at it. You also play Will Ferrell's fed-up wife in Old School. REEVES It's so funny that I've fallen into this traditional wife role, challenging the men. In my real life, thank God I don't have to do that. I'm not with someone who's in the business, so maybe that has something to do with it. But I don't think these women that I play are that simple. They just know how to handle certain situations, and it's ultimately out of love that they draw the line.
Is it hard to concentrate and remember your lines when you're playing off of Jeremy Piven? He's known for being very spontaneous. REEVES He is - he is so funny and unexpected, I just get to react to whatever he's doing. And he likes to start us off with a little improv before each scene. He's genius at them. HBO Improv like a warm-up, to ease you into a scene? REEVES Yeah, a lot of times he'll start a conversation as if he's Ari and I'm Mrs. Ari, and then we just parlay it right into what they've written. It's fun because I never know what he's gonna come up with, and usually it's hilarious. There's usually some conflict right off the bat. We have our own little improvised battles that often don't end up on film. |
