Jody Hill grew up in North Carolina and attended the film school at the North Carolina School of the Arts. After working several jobs in television in Los Angeles, Hill moved back to North Carolina to make a film that he had been working on for several years with the support of his family, friends, and fellow NCSA classmates Danny McBride and Ben Best. Using family mortgages and credit cards to complete production, the three created 'The Foot Fist Way,' which Hill co-wrote, acted in, directed and produced. Premiering at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, the film made a splash in the comedy world and caught the attention of Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. The duo convinced Paramount Vantage to acquire the project, which they released in May through their recently created Gary Sanchez Productions company.
'The Foot Fist Way' follows the life of Tae Kwon Do strip-mall instructor Fred Simmons (McBride), an insolent black belt dealing with his personal insecurities and his unfaithful wife. Co-writer Ben Best makes an appearance as Fred's martial arts B-list movie idol (Chuck "The Truck" Wallace) and Hill makes an extended cameo as Fred's longtime friend and fellow tae kwon do guru, the bleached blonde Mike McAlister.
For his next film, Hill wrote and will direct the Warner Bros. feature, 'Observe and Report,' starring Seth Rogen, Ray Liotta, Michael Pena and Anna Faris. 'Observe and Report' centers on Ronnie Barnhardt, a deluded, self-important head of mall security who squares off in a turf war against the local cops.
