National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) is a 24-hour, toll-free, confidential suicide prevention hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. By dialing 1-800-273-TALK, the call is routed to the nearest crisis center in a national network of more than 130 crisis centers. The Lifeline's national network of local crisis centers, provide crisis counseling and mental health referrals day and night.

 

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, advocacy as well as reaching out to people with mental disorders and those affected by suicide.

The Jed Foundation

The Jed Foundation works to reduce the rate of suicide and the prevalence of emotional distress among college students. JED's uLifeline program (http://www.ulifeline.org/) is an anonymous online resource center where college students learn more about protecting emotional health and what to do if they or a friend are struggling with mental health issues. The program also includes a self-eValuator (http://www.ulifeline.org/page/student/SelfEval.html) - a confidential online mental health assessment tool developed by Duke University Medical Center.

Published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in May of 2001, this landmark document articulated a series of goals and objectives for confronting the problem of suicide in the country.
