The following orginizations offer resources and assistance to individuals living with developmental and physical disabilities. ANCHOR A.N.C.H.O.R. (Answering the Needs of Citizens with Handicaps through Organized Recreation) is located in Long Island, New York and sponsors various activities including The Drama Program, a repertory company comprised of men and women living with developmental and physical disabilities. Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC) The aim of AHRC's work has been to offer disabled individuals day to day living that is as rich, absorbing and worthwhile as possible, with an emphasis on helping individuals live up to their maximum potential in the community. AHRC currently serves 11,000 individuals with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities, and their families. VSA Arts VSA arts creates learning opportunities through the arts for people with disabilities, offering programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and the visual arts. VSA arts currently has affiliates in 40 U.S. states and 70 international affiliates in 67 countries. VSA Arts' programs now serve 4.3 million Americans and 1.3 million people in other parts of the world. National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) The National Down Syndrome Society works to ensure that all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in community life. Parent support groups and related member organizations around the country and beyond comprise the NDSS Affiliate Program. The Arc of the United States The Arc is a national grassroots organization of and for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities, and their families, friends, and professionals who work with them. The Arc has 140,000 members who are affiliated through approximately 1,000 state and local chapters across the nation. UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) UCP provides direct services for more than 30,000 children and adults with various disabilities (including cerebral palsy) and their families, through UCP affiliates - a nationwide network of 111 affiliates in 39 states. YAI The YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities Network mission is to build brighter futures for people with developmental and learning disabilities and their families. YAI is firmly committed to helping the people we serve to achieve their potential for independence, individuality, productivity, and inclusion in their communities. |
