Below are just a few of the local, regional, and national organizations involved with equitable rebuilding of the Gulf Coast. For a list other resources and organizations working for racial and economic justice along the Gulf Coast and elsewhere, and to learn what you can do to get involved, click here.

Advocates for Environmental Human Rights
AEHR is a nonprofit, public interest law firm whose mission is to provide legal services, community organizing support, public education, and campaigns focused on defending and advancing the human right to a healthy environment, and advocating for the human rights of internally displaced Gulf Coast hurricane survivor.

Color of Change
Color of Change works to strengthen the voices of America's black populace in the political realm and to make the government more responsive to the concerns of Black Americans. The group was formed to use the organizing power of the Internet to give Black Americans a renewed and strengthened political voice.

Common Ground Relief
Common Ground Relief is a community-initiated volunteer organization offering assistance, mutual aid and support. Its mission is to provide short term relief for victims of hurricane disasters in the gulf coast region, and long term support in rebuilding the communities affected in the New Orleans area. Common Ground seeks to gives hope to communities by working with them, providing for their immediate needs and emphasizes people working together to rebuild their lives in sustainable ways.

Family and Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children
Family and Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children is a statewide membership-based organization that fights for a better life for all of Louisiana's youth, especially those involved in or targeted by the juvenile justice system.

GREEN FOR ALL
GREEN FOR ALL is dedicated to building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty. Founder Van Jones, who recently joined the Obama Administration, is the author of "The Green Collar Economy," a book that proposes solutions for our economic and environmental crises.

Habitat for Humanity: Gulf Recovery Effort
The Habitat for Humanity: Gulf Recovery Effort is Habitat for Humanity International's response to the destruction caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. The effort seeks to assist thousands of people and to work together in partnership with other organizations to serve as a catalyst in the rebuilding process.

Lone Star Legal Aid
Lone Star Legal Aid has been on the forefront of advocacy for residents impacted by Hurricane Ike in September 2008. As Ike made landfall, the LSLA team mobilized its disaster recovery experts, and traveled thousands of miles across the state, advising and helping Texans wherever possible through mobile offices staffed by the firm's disaster experts at FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) and through the Hurricane Hotline, as well as through help centers in community organizations and churches.

Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation
The mission of the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation is to transform the disaster caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita into an unprecedented opportunity for a new Louisiana - providing resources for the relief, recovery and betterment of all its people by ensuring access and opportunity and equity in rebuilding their communities and culture. To date, LDRF, with the community partners it supports, has helped over 2500 families return to their homes in hurricane- affected areas.

PolicyLink
PolicyLink has been applying its Equitable Development approach to the rebuilding efforts on the federal, state and local levels. In collaboration with its Louisiana-based staff and consultants, and relationships with government agencies and community groups, PolicyLink is working to ensure that the policies that guide the rebuilding will result in positive outcomes for impacted residents - particularly for those residents of color and low-income families most vulnerable after the storms.

The STEPS Coalition
The STEPS Coalition was formed in summer 2006 by groups fighting for fair allocation of resources in rebuilding Southern Mississippi. The STEPS Coalition is made up of nonprofit organizations dedicated to equitable recovery of the Gulf Coast. They work on housing, economic redevelopment, health, environment, human rights, and cultural protection issues in South Mississippi with the end goal of a fair, just, and sustainable recovery.

The Student Hurricane Network
SHN is a national network of law students dedicated to advancing the cause of social justice in communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by coordinating volunteer efforts, aiding public interest organizations, and educating members of the legal community about legal crises in the region.

PENDING LEGISLATION

The Open Congress
Created by the Sunlight Foundation and the Participatory Politics Foundation, Open Congress features search tools that allow users to research and track bills pending before congress.

> The purpose of The Gulf Coast Civic Works Act is "...to provide job-training opportunities and increase employment to aid in the recovery of the Gulf Coast region." This bill did not pass in the last session of Congress, but will be re-introduced in 2009.

> The goal of The Hurricane Katrina Disaster Inquiry Commission Act of 2009 is to create "an independent, Presidentially-appointed Commission to assess the circumstances related to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina."
