It's Father's Day 1999. After interviewing several men in an appropriate father-and-son venue - New York's Yankee Stadium - Adrian Grenier decides it's time for him to connect with the father he never knew. Adrian was born in New Mexico but raised in Brooklyn by his mother Karesse, a free spirit who admittedly spurned more than a few willing suitors in her youth. Adrian has obvious affection for his mom, and has few complaints about his upbringing, except for the fact that he had no father, and last saw him 18 years ago. In search of inspiration, Adrian interviews some more strangers at a housing project, then visits a priest (though Adrian's not very religious) and even a psychic for some spiritual perspectives.
At home, Karesse admits that Adrian always needed a father, psychologically and emotionally, and that she had essentially served the role of both mother and father throughout the years. As he questions her, Adrian learns that Karesse was involved with at least two men at the time of his conception (which he calls "a shot in the dark"). One of them, Bob, who has been dating Karesse for years, is getting married to her. Yet it soon becomes clear from Karesse's revelations that his real father is most probably a man named John, who has married another woman and lives in Lancaster, Ohio. Adrian makes a tension-filled phone call to John, telling him he'd like to celebrate his 23rd birthday (on July 10) by visiting John in Ohio.
After laying out his plans with his friend Carrie and his mother's friend Boris (who has been something of a surrogate father over the years), Adrian sets out in a car for Ohio with his best friend Jon, who will help with the film's production. Although the pair's destination is Lancaster, they make several stops along the way, including the child-filled home of Aunt Sue (John's sister), a bucolic commune called Pumpkin Hollow Farms , and finally, the house of John's parents Carl and Esther, a few hours south of Lancaster. Calling John from Carl and Esther's, Adrian offers to head north to his house, but John (whose wife is not a fan of the reunion) tells him not to - he'll travel to his parents' to meet Adrian.
Will they be able to relate to each other and come to turns with their past and potential future?
