Salim Baba
This 15-minute documentary short follows Salim Muhammad, a
55-year-old man who lives in North Kolkata, India with his wife and five children.
Since the age of ten, Salim has made a living screening discarded film scraps for
the kids in his surrounding neighborhoods using a hand-cranked projector that he
inherited from his father. A pragmatic businessman as well as a cinephile, Salim
runs his projector with his sons in the hopes that they will carry on his legacy of
showing films to the local children.
In addition to its Academy Award® nomination for Best Documentary Short, Salim Baba won awards for
Best Short Documentary at the Woodstock and Sidewalk Film Festivals and
second place for Best Documentary at the Palm Springs International Festival
of Short Films. The film has screened at the Telluride Film Festival, IDFA in
Amsterdam, IDA Docuweek, Tribeca Film Festival, Margaret Mead Film
Festival, IFP Market, Mill Valley Film Festival, Festival Nouveau Cinema
Montreal, Atlantic Film Festival, Bend Film Festival, Rhode Island Film
Festival, Indo-American Arts and Council Film Festival.
